Our recent paper @natgeosci.nature.com shows that over the Med, marine heatwaves are linked to subtropical ridges rather than atmospheric blocking, the typical cause of atmospheric heatwaves in central Europe.

The brilliant ECRs Giulia Bonino and Ronan McAdam led this work!

Our paper showing the differences between European and African weather forecast accuracy has appeared online. The results will not surprise meteorologists, but the international development community needs to hear this.

Weather forecasting in Africa needs to be done differently.

During 2002-22, the Antarctic lower stratosphere cooled, a sign of decreasing ozone. A new study showed that this cooling was driven by a slowdown of the atmospheric motion that transports ozone poleward. Removing this effect showed a continued healing of the ozone layer. 🌊🧪👍 doi.org/10.1029/2025...

The 2023-24 El Nino, despite being ranked the 4th strongest since 1979, exhibited an unusually weak teleconnection pattern. A new study showed that warm tropical Indian & Atlantic suppressed tropical Pacific rainfall response to El Nino, and thus was mainly responsible: 🌊🧪 doi.org/10.1038/s432...

New paper! Zhang et al., The 2023/24 El Niño event exhibited unusually weak extratropical teleconnections. We show that this was due to warm SSTs in both the tropical Indian and Atlantic basins. www.nature.com/articles/s43...

In this new paper we describe the trade off between forecast precision and accuracy. The smaller the location you are considering, the lower your forecast accuracy and to get acceptable accuracy we need to increase the spatial scale, the longer we try to predict
Balancing accuracy versus precision: Enhancing the usability of sub-seasonal forecasts
Forecasts are essential for climate adaptation and preparedness, such as in early warning systems and impact models. A key limitation to their practic…

It was great to give an overview of my research so far at the RMetS Early Career conference earlier today! And great to hear about the variety of other research from early career scientists in the field.

Congratulations to @nedcwilliams.bsky.social for his excellent Malcolm Walker Award winning lecture at the #RMetSearlycareers conference final talk!

We had a queue outside the door to see him, and the overflow delegates were watching live from another theatre. #RMetS @rmets.org @metoffice.gov.uk
