You can see why these numbers from ClaireC below convince people. But industry experts say the opposite eciu.net/media/press-...
Can anyone say where her numbers are from? They are transient not averages?

This should be shocking but sadly isn't. We desperately need better informed MPs:
Ask your MP to attend the www.nebriefing.org

@johnkenny.bsky.social Has anyone surveyed MP's understanding of the threat? Or solutions? I've always wanted to see evidence on those, and if they confirm my suspicions

This is behind pay-wall but "Culture war banter and point-scoring have left Maga facing a self-inflicted energy shortage" says much of it. It points out China investing in renewables fo cheap power, helping AI. USA isn't. If only the @telegraphnews.bsky.social applied some of this thinking to the UK
johnmarsham.bsky.social
This is great from @telegraphnews.bsky.social . You can't quite substitute UK for USA here, but you get the idea. It even refers to a culture war on energy. That in UK the telegraph has promoted! www.telegraph.co.uk/business/202...

Great write up. As Mike Berners-Lee says, we need a "Climate of Truth". It's like when Rishi Sunak said new UK oil/gas would reduce UK prices
johnmarsham.bsky.social
A reminder for everyone to ask their MP to go to this. Politicians must know the facts on the threat & solutions. And crucially, they need to have been publicly seen to have been informed, so they can't say they didn't know.

I urge all policymakers to attend this vital briefing on the climate & nature crisis, which brings the latest science from leading experts straight to the people in power. I’d like to see one in every country, & the organizers are open to sharing the model. More info: www.nebriefing.org

NEW: Something remarkable happened recently and hardly anyone noticed – GB electricity demand was 100% covered by clean power

We took a look at the data and this has happened for a record 87 hours in 2025 to date, twice as often as ever before

Thanks to @greatesthitsuk.bsky.social for opportunity to talk about role of climate change in Typhoon Ragasa.

Not sure if they included my bit on fossil fuel industry of political parties, after Trump's climate change is a "scam" comment (and of course Reform and other parties in the UK).

In the near future, having someone drive by with a petrol engine will be as noticeable as when someone lights up a cigarette.

It's weird - but now in Oslo, there's so many EVs that you notice the noise and the smell from individual ICE cars, and you realise how much we've been normalising it for ever. You can smell them half a street away.

And inside parking lots are just *quiet*.

It's absolutely astonishing: In just about 13 years, Norway has skyrocketed from virtually no sales of zero-emission battery electric vehicles to nearly 100% of all new passenger car purchases.

Energy independence from cheap & plentiful renewables don't just threaten the fossil fuel companies, it threatens major income streams & power of fossil-fuel exporting states. No wonder they are trying to obscure & delay

AI data centres projected to account for >4.% of global emissions within 5 years. We can't ignore this.

Important to also not forget that efficiency tends to increase consumption. More energy efficient AI very likely will increase not decrease it's energy usage.
ketanjoshi.co
Truly, this is such a great piece. I guarantee you probably have no idea just how deeply and profoundly the "AI for good" narrative has become embedded into the superstructure of so many progressive movements - not least the climate movement.

Go read @abeba.bsky.social's piece:
AI’s environmental impact is another issue that tech companies want to sweep under the rug. According to the International Energy Agency, the electricity consumed by data centers could double by 2030, reaching nearly 1,000 terawatt hours (approximately equivalent to Japan’s total electricity demand). Even in the best-case scenario, AI data centers will account for 4.5% of global energy usage by 2030 – and that is before factoring in Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Apple’s tendency to underreport their consumption. According to one analysis, the actual emissions associated with data centers are already about 662% higher than officially reported.

Even if AI systems become more energy-efficient, the increased use of AI – including by the oil and gas industry – is expected to cause emissions to skyrocket. Microsoft, while claiming to pave “the way for a sustainable, thriving planet for generations to come,” also signed a deal with ExxonMobil in 2019 to expand production in Texas and New Mexico by up to 50,000 barrels per day.

The industry’s record on social issues is no better. Despite claims to be “safeguarding fundamental rights,” Microsoft, Amazon, Palantir, IBM, Cisco, and Oracle have all reportedly provided technological infrastructure and tools used by the Israeli military in its razing of Gaza. While Google says it wants to “drive positive changes in underserved communities,” its contracts with repressive and authoritarian governments tell a different story, in some cases helping to roll back decades of progress toward upholding fundamental rights and advancing peace and democracy. On top of it all, these companies often respond to criticism with retaliation and censorship.

Just look at what happened with solar investment - it’s astonishing.

Solar has seen the most rapid investment growth, soaring from $142 billion in 2015 to a projected $441 billion this year.
