My favorite thing about baseball is its unparalleled literary history.
My second-favorite thing about baseball is how failure is the norm and nobody can succeed through force of will.
My third-favorite thing about baseball is this:

there are not a lot of sports where a person the shape of Alejandro Kirk could be playing at the highest level at the end of the season

Welp, as @davyandrewsdavy.bsky.social points out to me, that is a bugle that Armando is playing, not a trumpet, as there are no keys.

Meet Armando, the Section 409 trumpeter, who flew in from Panama today with 8 of his friends. This is their first time at Yankee Stadium. They landed at Newark at 5 pm today and came directly to the game.

Somehow, Armando got his trumpet through security. And everyone up here is glad he did.

Yankee Stadium with a halfhearted production of "Renegade" as David Bednar jogs out from the bullpen in a 5-1. The lights stayed on, with the PA cutting into the song to announce the call to the bullpen.

"WE NEED TRUMPET!" — Nearby fans chant to Armando in the 8th inning.

Make that 0-for-13 with 11 strikeouts. It's indefensible that Volpe batted there

Since his double off Kevin Gausman in his second AB of Game 1, Anthony Volpe is 0-for-12 with 10 strikeouts.

A fan near the aux box somehow got a trumpet into the Stadium tonight, and just played "CHARGE" after that inning-ending double play.

Looks like Aaron Judge's arm is OK. Just one hopped a ball to third base to keep Barger at second on Kirk's fly out.

He also ripped off a beautiful throw back into the infield after his diving catch last night to rob Santander.

Timothée Chalamet is here.

Cam Schlittler would strike him out on three pitches because he's out, and he's always been out. He's been out since the day he was born.
mattmartell.fangraphs.com
That's an 8-pitch third inning for Schlittler against 1-2-3 in the Blue Jays order. Settling in nicely. 34 pitches, 26 strikes overall

Aaron Judge this ALDS (15 PA): .667/.733/1.083

Albert Pujols vs Odalis Perez (32 PA): .609/.719/1.391

Basically, that first inning might've been their only chance to really cash in against him, and they only got the one run. We'll see if that comes back to bite them
mattmartell.fangraphs.com
Against the Red Sox, Cam Schlittler was amped-up early before falling into a rhythm after the second inning or so.

Tonight, it looks like he's throwing with more control despite the first-inning hits and some hard contact. If he finds a groove again, the Blue Jays could be in trouble.

Ron Dean, terrific Chicago actor, RIP. Dean was one of the many key components that make "The Fugitive" (1993) the masterpiece that it is.

Yankee fans are booing at the singing of "O Canada" before tonight's Game 4. Pretty poor taste

new @fangraphs.com: a look at the contrast between the bullpens of the Yankees and Blue Jays last night, as the Yankees staved off elimination. Via colleage @mattmartell.fangraphs.com, some excellent insight from Gerrit Cole regarding the times-through-the-order and repeat-reliever effects.

And that was after a Blue Jays win! Not sure how tonight’s loss — and Judge’s game-tying homer — will go over in Nova Scotia.

“You always feel the weight of the world and decisions you make, but when you feel a country, it gets a little dicey at times, like the 6th inning with the bases loaded, nobody out and Aaron Judge hitting. You feel like people in Nova Scotia want to come murder you.” — Toronto manager John Schneider

Ahh yes, the "I Took That Personally" Intentional Walk Effect... which, as I wrote about, doesn't appear to benefit the batter after the IBB in the aggregate.

But here it does. After a bases-empty IBB to Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger rips a double. Judge then scores on a sac fly.

What’s it like to be the batter after an intentional walk? Do you lock in more? Does it lead to more success? Or does the pressure get to you? How does it affect the pitcher?

For the latest @fangraphs.com mailbag, I asked 7 players these questions, and then had @jon-becker.com crunch the numbers:
FanGraphs Weekly Mailbag: September 27, 2025
This week, we answer your questions about the psychological effect of batting after an intentional walk, baserunning metrics, the coming labor war, and more.
