There’s a serious point here about currencies. There will be cases where the demand curve for foreign currencies will be upward sloping (i.e., demand for FX increases with price) and cases where it is downward sloping—demand for LC increases as it weakens. Spent a lot of time thinking about this.

I spoke to a Venezuelan woman who was arrested in this raid and later released with her 4yo son. She said agents broke down their door, pointed guns at them and made sexualized remarks about Venezuelan women. When she returned to her apartment it was boarded up and all her possessions were gone.

The other side is, of course - of course! - the companies making LLMs are not doing so with the goal of more easily sharing the material that people have made freely available on the web. They are doing so with the goal of enclosing it - converting the products of free human activity to commodities.

What makes LLMs work as a business is precisely that all this text is decommodified, free. As they themselves say, they'd have to shut down if they had to pay for their trainging data. Yet all that data is the product of human labor. This cutting edge of capitalism rests on a substrate of communism.

When we look at the useful stuff that LLMs give us, we should not think, how cool is this technology. We should think, what an amazing range of useful work people are willing to share online, freely, without any monetary compensation. Which the machine is just summarizing for us.

Man FÅR ju inte ha råd att ersätta saker som går sönder, t.ex. datorkomponenter ... man får ju inte spara. Så man lever hela tiden på ruinens brant.
De där stropparna i podden skulle inte klara ett halvår i min situation. Jag hyser djupt förakt mot människor som raljerar mot solidaritet och välfärd.
