This coverage should provide a glimpse of what we can expect from the BBC going into the Senedd elections in 2026. Let's see what it has in store for us

I wonder if and when the #BBC will take a deep, thorough look at the past, the ideology and associations of the leader of #Reform? If we can’t rely on our national public service broadcaster to scrutinise in detail a person who wants to be our PM, then what’s the point of defending it?

Social media activity also shows that Gill may have held pro-Russian beliefs for longer than the investigated period.

He posted in 2015, one year after the first Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine. "It's the EU that has created the 'new enemy' of Russia by courting the Ukraine."’

It is probably a rash decision, but I've written about why the BBC - and especially BBC News - isn't all bad.

And now, I'd best retreat to my bunker.

The damned BBC - annoying, wrong headed, essential
It is the worst media and news service, except for all the others

Last week I had the privilege of presenting at the VOX-Pol Next Generation conference in Prague.

It was an inspiring experience that captured what being an early career researcher should be about: support, collaboration, & enthusiasm for each other’s work.

At the Lib Dem conference, Sir Ed Davey accused the BBC of giving Nigel Farage and Reform UK too much uncritical airtime — going so far as to say its coverage sometimes looks like “copy and paste” from party press releases.

Should the BBC be giving Reform UK so much coverage? (Cardiff Uni School of Journalism found it featured in a quarter of all News at Tens in the 6 months to June).

Amazing write up of our new study on the coverage Reform and Liberal Democrats on bulletin news.

We found prior to the local elections in May coverage of Reform and the Lib Dems was low and broadly balanced.

After Reform's success in locals their coverage spiked and sustained at a higher level

Our new impartiality study out and in The Guardian - We found Reform given more airtime on TV news likely due to broadcasters taking into account the party’s latest electoral performance and sustained lead in the polls over several months. Thread 1/6: www.theguardian.com/media/2025/s...

I had a great time test driving my new project on politicians being interviewed on celebrity podcasts.

Podcasts are transforming the dynamics of set-piece political interviews. Moving from news logic to content logic.

We need to start integrating this new set of practices and their consequences.
stephencushion.bsky.social
The traditional broadcast interview is dead - @maxwellmodell.bsky.social persuasively argues at @cujournmedcul.bsky.social #FoJ2025 - as podcast interviews offer low risk spaces for niche audiences.

We’ll be exploring the impartiality of broadcast interviews soon as part of our AHRC project 👇

Does Reform UK and Nigel Farage feature more in TV news than Lib Dems and Ed Davey? Our new study in @theipaper.com shows they do which suggests broadcasters are applying more weight to the latest polls than no. of MPs in impartial news reporting (thread 1/5): inews.co.uk/culture/tele...
No, Farage is not given more airtime than other politicians, new research finds
A study by Cardiff University has challenged accusations Farage is given a disproportionate amount of coverage on political shows, although four in 10 Reform claims go unchecked

Do Reform's economic/financial plans add up?

Claims on:

- the costs of net zero
- taxes
- spending
- cutting waste

Do Reform's economic plans add up?
The party has pledged to boost spending, but some have questioned how the party intends to pay for its plans.

Contrary to claims that Nigel Farage is given more appearances than other politicians on discussion programmes, we found he appeared only five times. This could be an attempt by Reform to distance themselves from the idea they are a single personality party by pushing other figureheads. (6/7)
maxwellmodell.bsky.social
Third parties tend to be represented by a handful of figureheads. Major parties spread appearances across senior cabinet and shadow cabinet figures. While third parties are less visible overall, their figureheads are some of the most prominent individual politicians. (5/7)
