Universities can play a pivotal role in addressing the climate crisis – yet this potential is not always realised.

On 8 May, join @mccowan.bsky.social for the launch of Universities and Climate Action, which unravels the impact of universities on climate change.

No, I don't need a bloody copilot for this document, thank you.

Writing is, in no small part, a tool for thinking. If you outsource that element to a machine that cannot think, you shouldn't be surprised if, at the end of the process, neither you nor your reader are any the wiser.

The most depressing thing about the Trump administration has ended up being the spinelessness and capitulation of other world leaders

2. No service for people pronouncing chorizo as ‘choritso’

“There aren't kings and queens any more, only people”.

Translation: It’s going to be bad. Really, really bad. It’s happening sooner, and faster, and more drastically than anyone thought. And science doesn’t care if you believe in climate change or not.

This is what I keep telling students: you think AI is producing "good writing" and that it "thinks" because you have not actually learned what good writing and what critical thinking is, and if you want to survive in this hellscape, you have to learn these without AI.

The drum we need to keep beating: if students don't learn how to do things better than AI does, AI will take their jobs. The only way to learn that is *without using AI in the learning process*.

Hundred years of solitude is one of my favourite books. But I always remember García Márquez vowed it should never go on screen. Does it feel like a bit of a betrayal to watch it now?
