That seems likely. I imagine the Trump 2.0 regime is going to continue to act like they’re in service of a Golden Boy who can sell anything long after it’s true, hopefully this leads the the conditions where we can try these people for war crimes.

Less lethal projectiles are absolutely deadly, and have killed many people. Specifically, Boston police killed a Red Sox fan with pepper ball 21 years ago this month.

A lot of Americans are royalists but don’t consciously realize it. They just sort of assume the very wealthy belong to a peerage class that’s divinely ordered to have all the money and property and there’s no use worrying about it — it’s the **other peasant groups** you’ve got to look out for.

I get the idea of “we shouldn’t have even tried to deal, we should have just said no from the start,” but if we want to actually convince people that that’s the case, showing-not-telling seems far, far superior.

Let me emphasize once again that if you’re inclined toward “no deal is possible with these guys” then trying to make a reasonable deal and getting this reaction demonstrates that far better than just asserting it and refusing to try would have.

The formal law re: domestic use of the military is... complicated. But right now it's more about tapping into our deep cultural roots, the innate sense it's un-American, something evil dictators do, the notorious historical examples and even well-worn fictional fictional tropes reflecting as much.
