Russell is not only a great ambassador for the Community Transportation Academy, but also a perfect example of the idea that advocacy is a contact sport.
That means things don't change unless we get involved and speak up.
Well done Russell! And thanks to his mom for sharing these pics! (5/5)

There is much I love about conducting the Community Transportation Academy with @bikewalkkc.bsky.social , but some moments really bring it full circle.
I want to tell you about Russell. 🧵 (1/5)

It's an honor and a pleasure to be quoted by advocate extraordinaire @carterlavin.bsky.social .
Be sure to grab a copy of his new book "If You Want to Win, You've Got to Fight". It's full of the key insights you need to win safer streets for your community!

The crash is reported to have happened at the intersection of 23rd Street and Emery. Looking at the streetview, several elements stand out:
- wide street (5 lanes)
- no dedicated crosswalk at or close by the intersection
- somewhat limited lighting
- no signage to tell drivers of pedestrians (2/6)

For me, the childhood fever dream movie was Cats Don't Dance. Such a good movie, and *Natalie Cole* was the singing voice for one of the main characters!

What are gentrification and displacement? How do those elements intersect with #transportation?
@bikewalkkc.bsky.social explored this topic for Week 5 of our Community Transportation Academy. Big thank you to Triveece for presenting on this and the Reconnecting the East Side planning effort!

#KCMO and Jackson County, remember that there is a special election today!
For the record, I voted NO. I don't think our current county executive has done a good job, but I don't like the alternatives that are most likely to replace him. (1/2)

Week 4 of the Community Transportation Academy is in the books. This week, @bikewalkkc.bsky.social explored aspects of #transit and #multimodal infrastructure!
A huge thank you to Deasiray Bush, Lisa Womack, and Lukas Yanni for sharing their wisdom and passion with our participants.

Sucks that we're not playing in October, but at least we weren't out of it by the All-Star Break.

Last week, I got the chance to attend the RE-AMP Summit in Cedar Rapids, IA!
It was a great opportunity to connect with #sustainability advocates across the Midwest. I also moderated a panel on how to work with state and federal elected officials.
The work continues.

Some good news this morning for my fellow safe streets advocates in Midtown #KCMO:
Got this picture from a friend. Work is underway to implement a road diet on 39th Street!

Dem legislators and Missourians across the state aren't going down quietly. Along with countless others, I submitted testimony in opposition to both measures before committee hearings begin today. You can see portions of them below. (6/7)

First, #moleg is attempting to redraw the maps for our congressional delegation from 6R-2D map to a 7R-1D map.
They plan to do this by cracking the 5th District (largely Kansas City) across 3 newly drawn districts. See below. (2/7)

Week 2 of the Community Transportation Academy is in the books!
This week was about #transportationinsecurity, so @bikewalkkc.bsky.social organized a walk audit to help participants craft a better understanding of the built environment from the #pedestrian perspective.

Last night, @bikewalkkc.bsky.social hosted Week 1 of our Community Transportation Academy!
The 10-week course is designed to help everyday folks learn more about our region's transportation system and ways to create change within it.
A big thank you to Operation Breakthrough for hosting us!

One last summer trip and it was a big one!
We took the girls to Long Beach, Catalina Island, and Ensenada.
It was an exciting trip, but we're glad to be home and preparing for school soon.

Friendly PSA: if you're driving next to a cyclist and feel compelled to roll down your window to tell them to get out of the street--don't.
