justice will eventually be served by someone. all of this is just for a season. people are mortal, armies lose battles, political coalitions collapse. don’t end up looking stupid or evil in the future because you thought this was the end of history.

For giggles I’m sharing my 10 iconic jams of 2025.

1. @coheedandcambria.bsky.social “Father or Make Believe”

I was eating good with a new favorite banger from my all-time favorite band this year. An incredible album overall but this is my standout pick.

How many cautionary tales do we need about this? Can anyone in tech actually sit still long enough to finish a book or a film?

Just off the top of my head in fiction: V For Vendetta, Psycho Pass, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, Minority Report, Equilibrium, The Giver
Larry Ellison envisions a surveillance state in which techbros rule. '“Citizens will be on their best behavior, because we’re constantly recording and reporting everything that is going on,” Ellison said in an hour-long Q&A during Oracle’s Financial Analyst Meeting last week.'

The Ezra Klein style of caring about political “strategy” over consistent moral principles and values of your own reminds me of how a lot of pop culture consumers obsessively track box office and chart performance rather than just evaluating based on whether things are good or if they like them

TBH there is no way to design any system to counteract an executive declaring "I have all power and can exercise it arbitrarily" when a majority of the legislative and judicial branches responds with "that's right." Such a society is too primitive for modern governance and the rule of law.
Again, this is what I mean when I say the Constitution is broken

Which of the institutions it establishes, exactly, ISN'T broken?? Which is acting to maintain the constitutional order?
Trump is ordering the military to use “full force” against an American city, while the Supreme Court declares him the Sun King and Congress hides under a pile of coats.

The checks and balances only work when the institutions aren’t run by utter cowards and the complicit

It would be very easy for ICE to make clear who its officers are and to display valid law enforcement creds. They’re choosing not to, to intimidate and spread fear. This is not how law enforcement should operate in a free society.

The narrowing of what we imagine as "the liberal arts" to a subset of humanities subjects (literature, philosophy, art, etc.) should be rejected.

The liberal arts in fact embrace *the whole range* of non-pre-professional subjects, including the natural sciences.

That's the vision we should defend.

A regional war is still immensely bad but it's not really likely to spiral into WWIII and we do ourselves a disservice but talking about it in that manner.
I will also say that not every conflict is the start of WWIII, as evidenced by every conflict since WWII, and if you’re posting like this is the start of the big one you’re just making yourself and everyone else more miserable about something that is already bad.

I know tensions are really fucking high today but I'm seeing a pretty bizarre dichotomy declared between "tell trans kids we will fight to the death for them to have the right to transition" and "tell trans kids that if they do not have access to puberty blockers, life is still worth living"

Two things can be true: the Supreme Court is handing down a death sentence to trans kids, and also WE DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT THE DEATH SENTENCE and repeating things like "if you can't transition as a child you might as well die" where scared trans kids can see you talking is morally irresponsible.
