Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Title and author list of the online preprint by Bijl and Sliwinksa et al. (submitted to Biogeosciences) EGUsphere (https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-2025-1467) entitled "Reviews and syntheses: Best practices for the application of marine GDGTs as proxy for paleotemperatures: sampling, processing, analyses, interpretation, and archiving protocols", with a note which reads "Revised manuscript accepted for BG"—"BG" stands for "Biogeosciences"—and the co-editor-in-chief’s comment which reads "This publication provides a comprehensive review of the use of GDGTs (Glycerol Dialkyl Glycerol Tetraethers) for reconstructing past temperatures, with a particular focus on marine applications. It covers the full research workflow — from sample collection and processing to analytical methodologies, data interpretation, and data archiving. Importantly, the authors highlight best practices and propose recommendations to standardize approaches across the field. This review therefore serves as a valuable reference for both the paleoclimatology and organic geochemistry communities.". I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

When PA gave Shell a whopping $1.65 billion subsidy to build a plastics plant, officials promised an economic boom.

Thirteen years later, the plant is up and running, but the area is still in decline, and Shell wants out. Important story:

I shit you not, COVIDTests.gov, I site where we used to get a free Covid tests, now redirects to this complete bullshit from the white house.
A really stupid web page with blue background and Donald Trump standing in the shadows with text that reads:
LAB LEAK
THE TRUE ORIGINS OF COVID-19
THE ORIGINS.
"The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2" publication
- which was used repeatedly by public health officials and the media to discredit the lab leak theory - was prompted by Dr. Fauci to push the preferred narrative that COVID-19 originated naturally.
The virus possesses a biological characteristic that is not

🚨 Another new paper! 🚨

My coauthors and I gathered data on four planktic foraminiferal species from 115 core tops in the Indian Ocean to test the question: does adding non thermal parameters to Mg/Ca calibrations make them "better" than temperature-only models?

Check out our work below! 🌊🧪

The magnesium-to‑calcium ratio (Mg/Ca) of fossil foraminifera is a widely used geochemical proxy for reconstructing past ocean temperatures. Culturing…

US Bureau of Land Management implemented 4 new rules to increase oil-gas drilling on public lands (adding extra yr of “life” to unused leases, preventing updated stipulations to leases & 18-month turnaround on offering leases) WITH NO PUBLIC COMMENT INPUT.
