“In an era when information is abundant but trust is elusive, the collapse of local journalism poses a profound threat to our democracy. Across the United States, communities are grappling with the disappearance of news sources that once held power to account and kept residents informed”

The great champion of independent, speak-truth-to-power journalism, and of the democracy that can only survive if the press is free, Robert W. McChesney, has died at age 72. He fought the media oligarchs and the politicians who served them — and often won.

Now, we must carry the fight forward.

Something that's been clear to me for some time is that a lot of progressive advocacy and politics has overindexed on finding just the right combination of words to say while ignoring the fact that no media ecosystem exists where people might actually hear you say them. New from @mmfa.bsky.social

Great thread, great reporting
Whitewashing the uncomfortable parts of the past doesn't just affect Black stories. For example, you can't fully appreciate how a peanut farmer from Plains, GA became a beloved president unless you know TRUE Black History.

The unwhitewashed history of Jimmy Carter:

A thread.

Here's the reality about the #LAFires this week: this isn't the first time ANY of these places have burned. Not even close. In 2018, we mapped CA fire history to look at fire frequency across SoCal. Santa Monica Mtns area burns more than anywhere else -- up to once per decade in a given spot. 🧵

Fact-checking wasn’t “biased” against conservatives. Conservatives just shared more false content. If there’s a sportsball game and one team fouls four times as much, it’s not “biased” for the ref to call four times as many fouls against that team.

Meta is dropping fact-checking to avoid anti-conservative bias- but is there actually evidence of bias?
We this test empirically & find that conservatives
* ARE suspended more
* BUT share more misinfo
So suspension isn't necessarily evidence of bias www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Yes! Academics should join/start a union. Use your tenure for public good - while you still can
As many of us have been saying for years, this is coming for all of us (even academics who think they are ‘safe’ at R1s or in blue states). It’s been time to organize. Join/start a union. Connect with orgs and groups in your communities.

Great investigative reporting from The Alligator into the cronyism of former UFla. president (& former GOP Sen.) Ben Sasse, who spent his brief tenure tripling his office's budget and hiring a bunch of his former Senate staffers to lucrative, brand new remote jobs.
