hey for anyone who might want to actually own their kindle books instead of renting them, or who might be thinking of switching to kobo etc and will want to convert them to epubs, you now only have one week before amazon kills your ability to download its ebooks www.theverge.com/news/612898/...
Amazon’s killing a feature that let you download and backup Kindle books
It’s bad if you like to keep ebook backup copies.

I’ve spent most of my life steeped in anxiety, and one thing that made me feel less alone was knowing how unsurprisingly not new anxiety and related experiences are.

It’s in fragments, but this is one of many clay texts from ancient Mesopotamia that describes anxiety (possibly depression)

Given the recent proclamations from the UK government re: AI rights, if you have concerns & want them voiced, I highly recommend checking out ‘The Creative Rights in AI Coalition' (www.creativerightsinai.co.uk).

They provide an email template & form for raising awareness with your MP.

the sandman character death was based on a woman named cinamon hadley, a salt lake city goth scene icon who early sandman artist mike dringenberg was friends with when they lived there at the same time. is "friends" the right word? it's the word she used:

I had a walk today and thought about the relationship between civility, discomfort, and abuse.

Some of you know that “civility” is one of my hard “ugh” triggers. This thread will explain why.

It's Shirley Jackson's birthday today, and so it's a perfect opportunity to recommend my favourite story of hers, THE SUMMER PEOPLE. It's a subtle horror, quietly creeping up behind you until it lays a cold hand on your shoulder. I love it very much. It's only 13 pages and you can read it here:

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is “a book everyone should read” according to George Orwell. Easier said than done, mate.

But there is a graphic novel adaptation, if you fancy it

Top 5 regrets of the dying:

1) I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me

2) I wish I hadn't worked so hard

3) I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings

4) I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends

5) I wish I'd let myself be happier
