"Peace if possible.

Justice at any rate."

I came across that quote a few years ago while reading a biograph of Timuel Black. I think about those words.

I think about those words a lot.

Let’s see how long they fucking last.

U.S. Northern Command says that elements of the Texas national guard are now “employed in the greater Chicago area.”

The statement claims that they’ve been deployed to protect ICE and federal property.

Effective today, elements of the Texas National Guard, under Title 10 authority and command and control of U.S. Northern Command, are employed in the greater Chicago area.
These soldiers are employed to protect U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other
U.S. Government personnel who are performing federal functions, including the enforcement of federal law, and to protect federal property.

What the hell. I pledged $800 to a tabletop gaming Kickstarter described as a “miniature bonanza”. This is what I just got in the mail:
A miniature copy of the card game Bohnanza.

This movie is so Stephen Kingy though. Just having a lot of fun bouncing the camera all around this small town.

It’s the ghost pirates. The sheer mood and atmosphere of this movie is fucking incredible except the pirates are the wrong monster. They all act like Michael Myers, not like ghosts or pirates.

It’s fascinating how John Carpenter’s The Fog is almost one of his very best movies but just doesn’t quite work.

I’m genuinely 50/50 on if this is fake or not. I hope that it’s real.

TFW you paid $1400 to see Beckett’s most famous work without knowing anything about it
One Star Review of Waiting for Godot on Broadway
I recently attended Waiting for Godot on Broadway and spent over $1,400 for two Row C seats (103 and 104). I'm a longtime admirer of Broadway productions and even hold a season pass for Shea's Performing Arts Theatre, so I came in with genuine enthusiasm and high expectations. Unfortunately, this show was unlike anything ! have ever experienced —and not in a good way.
What I encountered was not the artistry, music, or emotional storytelling I usually associate with Broadway, but instead what felt like an endless cycle of nonsensical conversation between characters who seemed trapped in their own madness. I tried-truly tried-to find meaning, symbolism, or even a thread of emotional resonance. I stayed through the first half hoping the second would offer clarity. But by intermission, it was clear: this was a waste of both time and money.
Keanu Reeves is an actor I respect greatly, but I cannot fathom why he would agree to participate in such a disjointed, inaccessible production. His talent was lost in a performance that defied reason rather than provoked insight.
To anyone considering attending: unless you are drawn to highly abstract, nearly incomprehensible theater, I strongly caution you against this show. For the average, educated, thoughtful theatergoer, it is far more frustrating than fulfilling. In my opinion, this was the single most disappointing Broadway experience I've ever had - an unfortunate waste of money and, more importantly, of time.

This has also driven me crazy it’s not how I thought it was pronounced at all.

Look I'm not going to go full Stancil, but to the extent that anti-trans rhetoric did help Trump at all in 2024 one does wonder if its lost its potency because it was a red meat for an otherwise bored and agitated slice of the electorate that now has real fucking problems to worry about again.

6. The new survey is the second in two weeks to cast serious doubt on Earle-Sears’s strategy. A Hill/Emerson College poll last week showed Spanberger with a similar 10-point lead, and a striking 19-point advantage among independent voters, and voters not moved by anti-trans ads.

I think now is a good time to be highlighting this exact contradiction as loudly and as often as possible.

🥴

I understand why people *want* the police to intervene--normies are like, 'I thought cops are supposed to arrest people doing crimes, ICE is right there doing crimes, go do your thing'

but police organizations take nearly every opportunity to be like, 'oh you misunderstood what our thing is'
jesspish.bsky.social
The Fraternal Order of Police is on the side of MAGA and against the people they are supposed to be "policing." I think this says a lot to the people who insist local police are going to be "resistance."

We shouldn’t be putting a penalty tax on childlessness for lots of good reasons that everyone has already pointed out but also how much would you even be able to raise? $20 billion? Come on.
mezentine.bsky.social
You can try and implement a bunch of fiddly taxes that people hate that don’t even raise that much money or you can just rip the bandaid off and just go for the big bucks and have the money to actually implement comprehensive services.
mezentine.bsky.social
I’m pretty uninterested in “A tax on X to pay for Y” on the federal level as a general structure. It makes sense at the city and sometimes the state level because of how those budgets work, but the federal government needs to be thinking of how to raise vast new amounts of revenue across the board.
mezentine.bsky.social
There are just so many other ways you could raise tax revenue for these purposes?? Or in general?

A lot of people being extremely obtuse.

someone on the Motorola forums was having the same problem with the camera I've been having, but I just have to share the image they posted to demonstrate the issue.
it's the funniest shit I've ever seen in my life dude

The photo is of an elderly woman in gray clothes that has been so bizarrely processed that it looks both totally over and desaturated

Things I’ve seen in Chicago today:

-woman in coordinating pink mask and headphones on the El

-two older women, one white, one Black, walking tiny matching dogs

-handdrawn sign with a cute toad that reads “We’re toadally open”

-preschoolers swimming with pool noodles

Things I've seen in Chicago today:
- a herd of 2yos walking very carefully across the street in matching red shirts
- a man reading a newspaper warning people not to step near an injured bird
- was told "good morning! Nice titties!" by a man sitting on the sidewalk smoking a cigarette
- this arepa:
A very tasty looking shrimp and avocado sandwich.

More then any other issue I think we could be primed for an extremely sharp and rapid backlash to legalizing sports betting. Even people who thought it was fun at the start seem kind of miserable now. One of those things that could hit a thermocline and a bold politician could jump on.

Oh my god I can't believe that's a real slogan. That's incredible.

I think this is very plausible.
