Why do they want us to leave the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)?

The Government moots leaving the ECHR as a pragmatic solution to an immigration “crisis”, but is there a more sinister motive behind the push?

Long before calendars and countdowns, writes Peter Thurlow, the year turned at Samhain – the night we now call Hallowe’en.

For the Celts, it marked the end of one year and the start of another. 🍂
Autumn is the mind’s true spring, and Hallowe’en its new year
Our new year is an uneasy celebration tagged onto Christmas. Much better to return to its proper place, in autumn

To my grandads' generation, it really meant something because they had been through WW1

Same thing for my Dad's generation and WW2.

Now this mawkish modern "war Christmas" has become performative and tacky as hell. Hijacked by politicians who have no interest in its purpose it's lost meaning too
I recall in the 60s, Remembrance Day was one solemn Sunday morning. That was it.
It was a moving occasion at our local memorial and attended by actual WW1 and WW2 veterans. Unlike the mawkish weeks long competition for the most tasteless display of a poppy that it's become

Not quite sure why the media is presenting the Caerphilly result as a disaster for Labour, rather than as a perfect execution of its electoral strategy.

That strategy for *months* now has been to tell everybody who might otherwise be inclined to vote for them to fuck off.

And off they have fucked.

If she does this, the gap between her policy and Farage's will narrow considerably. Retrospective legislation is the choice of tinpot dictators and intellectual vegetables. It means no-one could take Britain's word seriously.
The Home Secretary is understood to be considering applying the policy to deal with concerns about the so-called ‘Boriswave'.

What has Yvette Cooper’s proscription of Palestine Action done to this country?

Beyond absurd. It’s extreme authoritarianism. These police should be arresting rapists & crooks, not neglecting those duties to spend time arresting citizens standing against genocide.

It undermines police and the law.

A troublesome fact about British parliamentary sovereignty is that it gives Parliament, or rather a PM with a compliant parliamentary majority, the powers of an absolute monarch. In the hands of a Trump ally and Putin tool like Farage, those powers could very easily be turned into dictatorship.
