Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.

From the moment the war started almost 12 years ago I knew the Russian invaders could not possibly conquer Ukraine. I have always believed Ukrainian defenders will prevail.

What surprised me is the weakness and cowardice of Western leaders and how easily the USA surrendered.

This opinion is bad news for the Trump administration, which is going to have to defend itself against Abrego Garcia’s claim he’s being vindictively prosecuted. But that claim is supported by some of the government’s own emails. Read the details here: open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...
Unsealed: Abrego Garcia
The sealed order in the Abrego Garcia case that I wrote about in Sunday night’s “The Week Ahead” column was unsealed today.

The Tribune documented 106 protesters caught up in the Midway Blitz dragnet -- 100 detained by agents and six indicted. At least half of the 106 never faced charges and, of the rest, only nine have active felony cases. Some have fallen apart spectacularly.

Rioters? Agitators? Immigration agents’ claims against US citizens mostly fall apart in court.
Time and again, Donald Trump’s immigration agents claimed horrific crimes at the hands of protesters in Chicago. Those allegations of abuse did not withstand the scrutiny of judicial review.

This is just comically racist:. There is something a bit “off” about Mamdani. Sorta like Obama.
This is how Christopher Caldwell begins his essay on Zohran Mamdani for the Claremont Review of Books.

In this segment @rickperlstein.bsky.social reads from a Herman Melville novel, "Redburn," which depicts poor Irish people fleeing the potato famine and the debate in the 1800s over immigration. It's eerily similar to today's disputes. Really remarkable stuff. Highly recommend you listen:
"Stephen Miller comes from a family about which the exact same things were said—because they were Jews from Tsarist Russia—that he now says about Somalian immigrants. It's really disgusting."

Great @rickperlstein.bsky.social segment on immigrants, America, and Herman Melville (discusses my piece):
Stanning Herman Melville on the CBC as my end-of-year "explains it all" book pick was a fave moment of 2025.

The 'kin' of ‘napkin’ means "little."

‘Nap’ comes from ‘nape,' which means “tablecloth.”

So a napkin is a little tablecloth.

How the clergy has rallied against the Trump administration's immigration policies

Huh? When did I say that?!
