My most recent book centers on the fact that two ancestors--one born in Ireland--were declared "colored" by the state of VA. Had they stayed in Virginia, my father couldn't have married my mother. Record keeping reinforced and sometimes simply invented permanent racial identities.

On Aug 24, 1869, Ohio Rep. John Bingham, principal framer of the 14th amendment, gave a remarkable speech on “Equal Rights-Impartial Suffrage,” in which he said of those who sought to reject the principal of birthright citizenship, “no greater political atrocity than this can possibly be committed.”

Worth adding that Hegseth blabs about the "warrior ethos" but these murders take place from the air, with Americans in zero danger from any sort of attack. It; snot even clear the people on the boats are armed

Melville, in an essay on Hawthorne, wrote "Genius, all over the world, stands hand in hand, and one shock of recognition runs the whole circle round." Change "genius" to "evil" and you have trump and his supporters. The shock of recognition runs the whole circle round

When your entire electoral strategy is “try to convert some republicans, no matter how much it enrages your base and makes them lack any enthusiasm to turn up, and then you can blame them for not voting hard enough for your crappy 10%-less-awful-than-the-GOP platform,” it makes perfect sense.

This is really what's wrong with Democratic "leadership." He's praising trump on the border, because he thinks it might peel of some GOP voters. We are supposed to rally for a Democratic party that's "slightly less bad."
Jeffries: "The border is secure. That's a good thing. It happened on his watch. He wants to claim credit for it, of course he'll get credit for that. In terms of making sure that we actually deal with the issues that matter, including on immigration, there's a lot that's left to be desired."

Apparently getting an MRI can prevent bad health stuff from happening. Who knew? Oh the medical breakthroughs the Trump admin has made! I'm going to insist on a weekly MRI from my Dr., to prevent stuff

It's so incredibly on-brand that in casting about for messaging that will resonate with The People, Dem leadership throws a dart and hits a book written by a VC who's a Harvard graduate and lifelong striver.

So it looks like Hegseth was personally directing the murder of six people suspected of smuggling drugs to somewhere. The whole apparatus: satellites, drones, missiles, millions of dollars, so Pete could satisfy his desire to be "a warrior" from 1000 miles away.

It's terrible that the two National Guard were shot in DC. A tragedy and a waste. If only they had not been sent to DC to stand around doing nothing as a political stunt.

The GOP congress is clearly mad at Trump's erratic, sloppy behavior, but maybe one thing they'll notice is how "law" offers a stable alternative to the whims of lunatic rulers

Awful story. Ice Agent taking pictures, in the Superior courtroom, of a high school age intern. Judge escorts her to his car to drive her home, ICE surrounds the car and threatens to break the windows if they don't exit.

Larry Summers was not only a dirty old man conspiring with a sex predator to get in the pants of a younger colleague over who he had power. He's also, for 20 years, been the poster boy for neoliberal, deregulatory, monopolistic economics.

Deeply ashamed just because you were soliciting a convicted child predator for advice on cheating on your wife my pressuring a younger colleague into sleeping with you while sneering at her and her work?
Gosh Ross Douthat better write another piece decrying woke culture

Gay was hounded for alleged plagiarism by the billionaire Bill Ackman, whose wife, MIT prof Neri Oxman, massively plagiarized her dissertation. Yet another example
