I hit the therapist jackpot. All Praise Anoia! She’s a Pratchett Fan. So my ‘24 was A Year truly deserving of the capital letters. My business was dragged into the Dungeon Dimensions, Mommy Dearest is Walking the Sands, Death claimed my cat and The Lords & Ladies of a parasitical-parallel dimension have taken the Castle. All-in-all the 6th worst year of my life. *Mommy Dearest, as she liked to be known, always insisted on the capital letters being clearly enunciated. Which tells you, Dear Reader, all you need to know to understand why the year of her death isn’t in the top 5. It was the only good thing to happen this year. The writings of Sir Terence David John Pratchett OBE have gotten me through most of it. But sometimes I need a little more. Since I can no longer afford the bar tab for a proper bartender, I had to settle for a therapist. So I rolled the dice, it was a million-to-one chance* and the Lady was kind. I have a practicing Headologist cleverly camouflaged as a practitioner of the black arts of psychology. *Ok, actually a 200,000-to-one chance, But if you squint real hard and give it some menacing side eye, it will shuffle its feet and look embarrassed and reluctantly agree to be a million-to-one chance, but just this time. My Lady of Negotiable Attention is clever and kind, speaks fluent Ook, understands a life of Rincewind-ness and is a firm believer in Dried Frog Pills. She thinks she will have me hallucinating I’m sane any day now.

I think I broke my therapist. I mentioned in passing that I dyed my naturally blonde hair red, because redheads in my country get an altogether better class of sexual harassment. Now normally my therapist has compassionate, validating words with extremely gentle suggestions on the tip of their tongue. This time they got the first three words out, “I can see…” And then they froze. It was total stillness for at least 10 seconds. I know this because I started counting. I thought the video had frozen until their cat’s tail flicked into frame. 10 seconds doesn’t seem like a lot until someone is looking in your general direction, but the 3 oz of brain matter behind the eyes is totally consumed containing the explosion from an IED (Improvised Explanatory Device). And then I watched as a look of awe and horror did battle with their professionalism for control of the face. The eyes came into focus as they searched my face trying to assess the validity of my claim. And then came ah-hemmmm in the back of the throat sound that indicates the brain has sent the *** error redo from start *** command. The professionalism won as they assembled and delivered the situationally appropriate phrase used by all fashionable counselors to hide utter befuddlement and dismay “well that’s certainly an interesting take…”

Witches didn't fear much, Miss Tick had said, but what the powerful ones were afraid of, even if they didn't talk about it, was what they called "going to the bad." It was too easy to slip into careless little cruelties because you had power and other people hadn't, too easy to think other people didn't matter much, too easy to think that ideas like right and wrong didn't apply to you. At the end of that road was vou drooling and cackling to vourself all alone in a gingerbread house, growing warts on your nose.

Depression Confession : My brain fog is a direct result of trying, very hard not to see things that suck my life that I can’t do anything about. It means I don’t see some of the things I should see. But I’m OK with that.
