I am so happy Fred Rosen and the gerontocracy of Bel Air didn’t get their way. Thousands of students and university workers matter more, it turns out!

the thing that drives me crazy is people putting the weights in the wrong place, as if it is somehow too difficult to put the 10 pound plate on the 10 pound plate rack
I don't ask for much gym etiquette wise but if you take 10+ minutes between multiple sets and do not allow people to work in with you I need to speak with whoever raised you (and to have a snack and a nap to deal with my Big Feelings)

I didn’t have a ton of time for it, but I spent a few minutes during our first lecture explaining that a syllabus is an argument, not an encyclopedia. I asked students to imagine they were teaching a class on C20 US history & gave them a list of events to cover, from which they had to choose 5. +

(And this is Renee from confirmed socials- a photo of a different woman with red lipstick is going around, but that was a classmate.)

i find it funny when digital rights activists, particularly in the US, speak out about the problems with US tech and even advocate digital sovereignty now, as if their advocacy and opposition to government and regulation didn’t help usher us toward this terrible reality in the first place

I think they tried this in China in the second half of the nineteenth century. Wonder how that turned out..
Some might be tempted to think Mark Lutter’s “charter city” proposal for Venezuela is reasonable. Many such people are unaware of the ideology of the men—eg, Palantir co-founders Peter Thiel & Joe Lonsdale & Thiel Fellowship co-founder Michael Gibson —who fund or otherwise promote Lutter’s work. 1/

Transparency & uniformity in pricing—treating likes alike—is a big part of what people demanded from the platform monopolies of a century ago, the railroads.

Today platforms use "algorithms" to make wages and pricing opaque enough to enable price discrimination and theft.

It's the same story!
