Friday Flower 006: Aquilegia 🌸🦋

Columbines vary in stamen number, making them a powerful model for how floral whorls expand.

Darwin marveled at their long nectar spurs, which co-evolve with hawkmoth tongues to reward pollinators that brush the stamens ✨

Very excited to see our @nikogeldner.bsky.social lab x Feng Zhou lab work featured on the cover of Science!
(1/5) We reveal how root architecture and nutrient leakage shape spatial patterns of microbial colonization, moving beyond traditional models of uniform exudation.
science.org
Using precise spatial and temporal analysis, researchers in Science provide insight into how bacteria around the root interact both with the plant and with each other.

A confocal microscopy image shows root-colonizing bacteria clustering around an emerging lateral root, where localized glutamine leakage induces spatially confined reporter activity.

Excited to begin the search for the next (6th) Burpee Post-Doctoral Fellow in Botany here in my lab at Bucknell! Funded research and teacher-scholar training embedded in the primarily undergraduate institution (#PUI) environment.

Speaking of #GRFP, it's upsetting to see my student's reviews (finally came out). The main critic: they didn't think he can do a plant bio project bc he didn't study plant bio in undergrad. Sure he did a year of post-bac in plant bio and now in a plant bio PhD program but obviously nothing matters 🤷‍♀️

Every single one of these leaves is a bug.
It’s a display case containing 20 or so bugs that look like leaves, at the Montreal Insectarium. Most of the bigs are brown, but some are light teal. The glass is labeled “Just like a bug” in English and French. Zoom in on a whole bunch of brown not-leaves arranged naturalistically on a branch.

The new #NSF #GRFP application now excludes 1000’s of students, including those who were told they could apply this year, or who planned to apply next year.

We have a new specific petition urging #NSFGRFP undo this harmful action. If you are impacted sign here: laurenkuehne.github.io/grfpChanges/
