Do men see gender parity in representation as detrimental to their interests? What about when women’s representation exceeds parity? And how do such shifts affect men’s fairness perceptions? I address these questions in my article, now published in PRQ. 1/9

New article: "Fundamentals of Solidarity: Race-Based Caucus Organizing in Houston" is live at Urban Affairs Review. I'm grateful to the organizers who let me into their world and work so we could produce this piece. Check it out 👇

Grassroots organizations often espouse multiracial solidarity as a value but struggle with putting this value into practice. How can organizations, especially t...

If you are looking for a jazzy-bluesy album to listen to, can I recommend Olivia Dean's new album The Art of Loving?

It's really lovely. If you like Maggie Rogers, this is for you!

This was a really challenging interview and I thank @catherinedevries.bsky.social for pushing me to reflect on why and how I write. I was kind of surprised by the result myself.

Hope you like it… and read the other interesting interviews by her.

Writing isn’t just about what you say, it’s about what you refuse to lose in the process.

Read my conversation with Cas Mudde on writing, voice, and resisting conformity in academia, in the media, and on the page.

FYI, if you try to measure the strength of civil society (what Hahrie, Milan, and I call civic opportunity in our 2023 Nature Human Behaviour paper), you may want to consider using our org-, county-, and ZIP code-level datasets published in Scientific Data: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

There is a name for people who write in short blocks. Authors!

If you write in long sessions only, you will end up either unpublished, or disappointed

For an overview of the psych research on this I love Paul Silvia’s /How to Write a Lot/
mirya.bsky.social
Duration: how long do you spend writing, when you write? (lots of people seem to think the only way to write a lot is to spend really long blocks of time writing. I disagree)

I ask: what's your ideal amount of writing? And how does that compare to your actual writing practices?

An embarrassment of riches! Thanks to all the folks who sit on all the APSA committees and read all my silly work & especially to my coauthors for putting up w me
Three award plaques for best paper and best book sit on a black desk. On the edge of the image are various desk items like a sign that says NOPE and a water bottle with a horseshoe sticker on it

My reaction to reading papers outside my own area. Three categories:

1. Brilliant
2. Obvious
3. Impenetrable

It seems very... stupid to be writing about writing right now. I think about this dog every day.

But also there are a lot of us whose job is to write and we still want to write even as <waves arms around> happens. So this is for all of us.
A gold retriever wearing a pink tie sits at a laptop. Behind the dog is an apocalyptic scene of bombs and fire and war. The dog just looks at the screen of the computer like it is just tappity tapping

And! Recovery is just as important as writing! Go touch grass! Talk to people for real for real. Volunteer! Dance! Have fun! And then get back to writing.

The ideal writing practice is a combination of duration, frequency, and intensity, with a recognition that you can vary one of these levers easily, as long as you are taking the others into account!

What's your ideal combination?
