Sheffield UCU @sheffielducu.bsky.social has been taking strike action in defence of jobs this term.

But in an alarming escalation, Sheffield management has threatened to "lock out", ie. deduct pay at 100% for each day, if members refuse to reschedule marking, beginning with the start of 2026.

I have to say as a former chair of the UCU Disabled Members Committee… this is becoming beyond bearable to watch happening inside of our own union. My branch @ucukent.bsky.social Has discussed this several times and on each occasion offered solidarity to our staff.
Being disabled shouldn’t mean you’re on a lower wage, or that you’re afraid to ask for support at work because it could hit you financially.

Having a reasonable adjustment should never lead to a pay cut.

But this is what’s happening to some UCU staff right now.

Our members have voted to support industrial action to fight against job cuts passed today!

In the ballot our 72% of members were in favour of strike action, and 90% in favour of action short of strike. Turnout was 58%.

Thank you to all members, reps and officials for helping us get the vote out.

VCs don’t run universities.

We do.

After another real terms pay cut, UCU is launching a UK-wide strike ballot.

Ballot opens October.

Vote YES.

An employer that sets out to crush it’s union activists is a disgrace. A union that does this to its employees is not fit for the name union!
😡 Imposition, not negotiated agreement
😡 Victimisation of reps
😡 Refusal to engage with the recognised union

☣️ All signs of a toxic organisational culture & not what we should see from a union employer.

Shame on @ucu.org.uk whose staff deserve so much better

This is so far from working for any employer should look like @drjogrady.bsky.social Do you have no idea how you are green lighting our employers to break @ucu.org.uk? #Solidarity @uniteucu.bsky.social
This is so far from what working for a trade union should look like, don't you agree @drjogrady.bsky.social Time this dispute between @ucu.org.uk and its staff was resolved.
These are not isolated experiences.

What we don’t need is our union modelling atrocious behaviour and giving our own bosses licence to copy in the process.

Solidarity @uniteucu.bsky.social, that level of intimidation is bad for anyone’s well-being.
It gets worse…

Members back at work today after taking lawful strike action are now being threaten with disciplinary procedures if their auto-replies mention the reason for their absence during future strikes.

In what trade union world is this acceptable?

Staff being told that revealing they are union members by posting an auto reply is a breach of GDPR even though it is their data … And going into people’s auto replies on the basis of assumed union membership as if this does anything but confirm what people are saying about a toxic workplace.

Interrupted my lunch hour in my part time work to 1. Take pain killers and 2. See that my work shyness has been cured by removing my eligibility for #PIP and #DisabilityBenefit. #Labour just handed me an old age of poverty and removed my ability to pay for things that make me able to work.

@BBCr4today I am working (part time) and it’s PIP that pays for the aids &services I need to have less pain and less fatigue to be able to work. You take that away and you drive me out of work. This is cruel and dishonest. Very of us who will lose are in work

🚨Employer ignores dispute to rush restructure🚨

Instead of focusing on resolving our long-standing dispute over a racist, dysfunctional & toxic workplace, our employer yesterday announced a significant restructure that will impact nearly a quarter of staff, some significantly.
