“Starving children screaming for food as US aid cuts unleash devastation and death across Myanmar”

Never forget or forgive that Trump, Rubio, & Musk *chose* to inflict this monumental level of death and suffering on the poorest & most vulnerable people.
Starving children screaming for food as US aid cuts unleash devastation and death across Myanmar
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has repeatedly said “no one has died" because of his government’s decision to gut its foreign aid program.

Any ideas what may have happened in the interim?

perhaps the biggest story TFPever ran was a catastrophically shoddy argument that George Floyd ackshully died of an overdose. When confronted with irrefutable evidence that the piece was simply wrong, Weiss didn’t take it down, she asked her critic, @radleybalko.bsky.social, to come on a podcast.

People recognised as refugees fleeing persecution & granted the right to live in the UK to be denied the right to be joined safely by their spouse & children.

This Labour govt is a moral void, a stinking darkness, an empty hollow of cowardice & contempt. #r4today www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Last one on Farage setting the terms of debate atm: he's by all accounts *the* major face of the primary policy change of the last five decades in the UK (we were told without a doubt that even if you don't like it, you have to respect his role in it) and he's never asked to stand for how that went

So, this is overall a useful thread in clarifying thinking but IMO this bit confuses tight labour markets that are a function of robust aggregate demand and high churn with acute sectoral shortages that just lead to lower levels of service provision. Which is a big problem for an aging society.

There is a third view (the Tory 2020 revealed preference), in which the government attempts to ‘fill labour shortages’ with immigration. I am actively against this view - I think it’s wrong on the economics. I think evidence shows that labour shortages are good for workers and good for productivity.

OK, so I've listened to the Ezra Klein/Ta-Nehisi Coates podcast and it's worth people's time I think. Broadly, they fundamentally conceive of their role as political actors profoundly differently: Klein sees himself as a Dem coalition builder/strategist while Coates maintains an independent voice.

Migrants already "earn the right to settlement" through extortionate visa costs, which can run into tens of thousands of pounds. They prop up key services, including through the Immigration Health Surcharge.

Pushing the hostile environment on steroids helps no-one.

One person having the power to upend entire industries and economic sectors on a whim every day that puts companies out of business and workers out of jobs with no legislative input is an autocracy, regardless of whether that person initially acquired power through an election.

This captures much of the frustration of today.
The image is an X post by @RealJakeBroe from 7 hours ago, featuring a two-panel comic. The top panel shows a scientist pointing to a chart with a general trend and an outlier, illustrating a rational argument. The bottom panel depicts a person labeled "ANTI VAX" pointing to a similar chart, labeling it "CONSPIRACY THEORY" with "Lies" and an outlier called "IRREFUTABLE PROOF!!!", satirizing irrational arguments. The caption reads, "It is difficult to win an argument with a smart person. It is impossible to win an argument with an idiot."

Sky News and the BBC repeatedly mention the "migrant crisis" in doing so they are normalising and legitimising far right talking points. There is no "migrant crisis", there is only migrant hysteria, which the British media is feeding into instead of countering.

The entire country has lost their minds, whipped into a frenzy by Farage who has dictated the direction of the country from the “sidelines” and zero accountability.
