Andrew Kadel @DrewKadel@social.coop My daughter, who's had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen. Something that seems fundamental to me about ChatGPT, which gets lost over and over again: When you enter text into it, you're asking "What would a response to this sound like?" If you put in a scientific question, and it comes back with a response citing a non-existent paper with a plausible title, using a real journal name and an author name who's written things related to your question, it's not being tricky or telling lies or doing anything at all surprising! This is what a response to that question would sound like! It did the thing! But people keep wanting the "say something that sounds like an answer" machine to be doing something else, and believing it *is* doing something else. It's good at generating things that sound like responses to being told it was wrong, so people think that it's engaging in introspection or looking up more information or something, but it's not, it's only, ever, saying something that sounds like the next bit of the conversation.

It would take several days to get back to the academy from Gronder, but the travel hadn’t dimmed the victorious Blue Lions’ exuberance in the slightest. A wistful smile played on Dimitri’s face as he watched Ashe and Annette pull Dedue away from his self-imposed cooking duty and into their circle, laughing as they danced around the campfire. Dimitri sat apart, but for once, it wasn’t to brood in his dark thoughts alone. Next to him, the light of the fire flickered across the professor’s face, alternately highlighting her wide eyes, her glossy hair, her full lips that had finally learned to smile... Normally, shame or propriety forced him to avert his eyes quickly. Or his ghosts would scold him for his distraction. But just this once, he let his gaze linger on her. The dead had been strangely silent as of late. Perhaps he should have felt guilty for neglecting them, but the warm comfort of the professor’s presence soothed his conscience. So many unlikely coincidences had aligned to bring them together that he was tempted to think it was fate. “Professor, forgive my impertinence, but there is something I have been wondering for a while...” She turned to him and tilted her head, accepting and open, like she always was. “Why did you choose to lead the Blue Lions? I was surprised, given how highly sought after you were by all the house leaders. Edelgard in particular was quite... persistent.” She honored him with a subtle smile. The mesmerizing sight was becoming more and more common. Still, his heart thumped so hard he could hear it in his ears, not yet accustomed to the radiant warmth of her smile. He doubted it ever would be. “The other colors clashed with my hair,” she replied. He snorted in disbelief. “Surely not!” “It’s true. I didn’t realize what an important decision it was back then. My emotions were...” "Yes, I remember.” It was sometimes hard to believe the woman next to him was the same mercenary he’d met in Remire. In the darkness, a surge of boldness coursed through him, and the dangerous question that burned on his tongue tumbled out. “Now that you know, would you... choose us again?” She truly surprised him then, placing a warm hand over his bloodstained, scarred one. “I’m right where I want to be, Dimitri.” “I—” he sputtered, jaw hanging slack, unable to form any further words. The unguarded yearning he felt was surely written all over his face as he stared back at her. “Besides,” she added, bumping her shoulder into his playfully. “Turns out, the professors don’t even wear the class colors.”
