are there RPGs that allow you to (frequently) build your characters backstory through dialogue options AS YOU PLAY?

like an NPC asks you "hows your parents" and you can say
"they're fine" or
"I never knew them" or
"they died"
and then the game remembers and brings it up later

I don't know how this became a thing, that like, nearly every game is paid at like, $20-40 *per session*. Who are these people who can spend 100+ dollars a month on four D&D games. And why of all things that instead of something you can actually keep. Is it just me or is that weird? #D&D #Pathfinder

My party for the Pathfinder game I gm are in the drow city and they ran into mens rights activist and they feel weird like

"In any other part of the world this would be fucked up, not sure how I feel about it in the drow homeland"
