I spent more than a decade at The Post. It was good to me and I was proud to work there. I’ve largely refrained from being critical since I left. But this framing of the special counsel probe is embarrassing and flatly wrong. Stunning, but not. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...
Opinion | Jack Smith’s lawfare and James Comey’s arraignment on pathetically weak charges
Good people will be deterred from public service if they see a meaningful risk of winding up in jail afterward.

The literal reading of this statement is Pam Bondi is planning extrajudicial executions of random protesters.

My gosh. After the US bombed multiple boats in the middle of the ocean, murdering people on grounds that they were allegedly "carrying drugs," the US Attorney General says "Just like we did with cartels, we're going to take the same approach, President Trump, with Antifa."

I wrote this piece yesterday about how people don't think Democrats praise hard work. I wonder if progressives are afraid of talking about work because of Republicans are pushing work requirements. If you are a Dem and have seen any memos/convos like that, reach out newrepublic.com/article/2014...
Here’s One Reason Democrats Are Struggling With the Working Class
Voters see them as focusing on the poor and needy rather than valuing hard work. But that can change.

“When streets became calmer & safer, more people felt comfortable trying a bike commute for the first time. Families began pedaling to the park…Local businesses saw new life…And cycling stopped feeling like a niche activity—it became part of everyday Parisian life.”

It is what I called school lunch soup, with ground beef and vegetables in a tomato and broth base with italian seasoning and onion, garlic, and celery if anyone grew up in the mid-South.
monicapotts.bsky.social
I'm eating leftover soup I made with frozen and canned vegetables for lunch and just felt compelled to say that I don't know who decided they needed to vilify frozen and canned vegetables but they are fine and good for you and make life easier and cheaper and you should use them if you want.

My profile of the delightful Keri Russell, the darkly funny, surprisingly introverted former New Mickey Mouse Club member who—even after Felicity, The Americans and The Diplomat!—has never fully embraced the idea of herself as an actress: www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

But, offscreen, she’s not even sure that she wants to be an actress.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

We are experiencing a "dual state" phenomenon, writes @pemalevy.bsky.social, when "a dictator can exercise unfettered power " ensuring a "'zone of lawlessness' can swallow some, while the rest go about their lives under the protection of the law." www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
The “dual state” theory was invented to describe Nazis. The Supreme Court could take us there.

The party definitely courted them by targeted them on some issues (namely abortion and women's rights) but then the party became much more beholden to them. The evangelical right definitely changed the party, and doing that also changed the church. Symbiotic relationship now.
monicapotts.bsky.social
2024 was an anti-incumbent year around the globe largely because of forces beyond any one lawmaker's control and I feel like that's where all analyses should start and I don't really know how much more complicated it should get than that.
monicapotts.bsky.social
The left, as long as I've been a voting adult, instead "protests" bysitting elections out or voting third party when Dems make them unhappy. Except for local elections, that really has no impact, except to torpedo their goals by getting the opposition elected. and doesn't move the party at all.
monicapotts.bsky.social
I've said it before: Evangelicals changed the Republican Party by becoming it's most loyal and important voting bloc. They determine the outcomes in primaries and never waver from their demands and hold officials' feet to the fire. They continue to vote for their party even when they're not perfect.
monicapotts.bsky.social
Related, I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago. Pundits across the broad left are trying to decide who should be the villain in the Democrats new narrative about why they should win. Some want it to be The Groups: newrepublic.com/article/2006...

Just a reminder that Trump is sending Troops to cities because his base loves it. they hate cities and don't understand or care about them, and also don't believe anything positive anyone says about them. Think about that when someone implores you to understand MAGA. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

It's bad enough if President Trump is demanding authoritarian powers in violation of the Constitution ...

But if his unelected aides are manipulating him to get their own authoritarian policies in place, that's sort of a bigger deal.
hunterub.bsky.social
This feels like evidence Trump's aides are deliberately gaslighting him, which is unfortunately very easy to do with dementia sufferers (Trump did it to his father) and which aides are using to seize control of the US military for their own purposes.
ronfilipkowski.bsky.social
The protests are on one block. Nothing is burning down. His justification for sending in troops is all based on lies.
