There is nothing Republican leaders are doing that even suggests they are serious about ending the shutdown or preventing your health care costs from skyrocketing—House Republicans aren't even here!

If someone told you a year ago this would be a headline in 2025, you wouldn't have believed them.

Authoritarianism has taken over our country.

ANDREESSEN: Even if AI ends up destroying all the jobs, “the result would be hyper-deflation of prices, which is the thing that people miss. .. Things that today cost a lot of money will all of a sudden be cheap or free.”

Bishop Seitz on meeting with Pope this morning: “Our Holy Father is very personally concerned about these matters. He expressed his desire that the U.S. Bishops' Conference would speak strongly on this issue. It means a lot to all of us to know of his personal desire that we continue to speak out.”

The judge also set an initial schedule for pre-trial motions.

The first set is expected by Oct. 12. Per Comey’s defense counsel, that batch will include motions to dismiss for selective and vindictive prosecution, as well as a motion challenging the legality of Halligan’s appointment as US attorney

A second set of pre-trial motions is due by Oct. 30.

Comey’s defense counsel, Patrick Fitzgerald, said he expects that batch to include a motion regarding abuse of grand jury process and an “outrageous government conduct” motion.

Republicans are so incredible at party unity. Absurdly so.

In Virginia they are running a black Christian nationalist who thinks that homosexuality is "an immoral lifestyle choice" for governor alongside a white gay man who ran a blog featuring slavery and Nazi fetish content.

When you read this about people being *afraid to go to. church* lest they be snatched by ICE, remember that Cardinal Timothy Dolan serves on Trump's Religious Liberty Commission (www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-st...) and was honored by the Becket Fund this year (becketfund.org/media/cardin...)
The letters and video he brought to Leo detail the fear that even legal migrants are facing every day. U.S. citizens, immigrants with legal status and children have been among those detained in increasingly brazen and aggressive encounters by federal agents. In Leo’s hometown of Chicago, agents have stormed apartment complexes by helicopter as families slept, deployed chemical agents near a public school and arrested a city councilman in the hospital.

“They can’t go out. They are afraid to shop, to go to church and so they stay home,” wrote Maria in one of the letters delivered to Leo. Originally from Guatemala, she has lived in San Francisco for a quarter-century and qualified for asylum years ago, but has relatives in the U.S. who are not legal.

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

Stunning and brilliantly reported piece from @lisang.bsky.social at @newlinesmag.bsky.social about how religious nationalists are taking over secular Tel Aviv

The Settlers Bursting Tel Aviv’s Bubble

newlinesmag.com/reportage/th...
We could have been at a posh event hosted by bourgeois secular Tel Avivians, but for two factors: The food was all kosher, and there were guns everywhere. The publisher of one of Israel’s best-known far-right media platforms, a 50-something man with a generous paunch and a crocheted skullcap on his bald spot, had an M16 rifle slung over his shoulder like a purse with a cross-body strap. At least a third of the men roaming the room or standing in clusters of people chatting while nibbling from plates of food had holstered automatic pistols tucked into their waistbands. One young woman with long hair, about 19 years old, wearing a long-sleeved, modest dress that suggested she was religious and conservative, also carried an M16. When I lived in the country, this entire scene, of armed religious nationalist settlers sipping espresso on the Tel Aviv University campus, would have been inconceivable. This was not their turf — until suddenly it was.

RNC-Hired Mapmaker Denies Using Racial Data in Texas Gerrymander

www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...
The testimony from Adam Kincaid, the director of the National Republican Redistricting Trust, included the following information:

• That Kincaid had numerous contacts with the White House and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) over the redistricting effort — including sending messages on Signal that were set to automatically delete.

• That Kincaid viewed a draft of a letter sent to Texas by DOJ officials, urging them to redistrict because of concerns about race-based districts in the state’s existing map.

• That Kincaid was hired by the Republican National Committee (RNC) to draw the map.

• And that Kincaid entirely ignored the input of ordinary Texans, provided at public hearings held over the summer — instead taking input only from the White House and Texas’ GOP congressional delegation.

So this is funny.
The administration just issued a rule slashing foreign agricultural worker wages. And to justify it, in a public filing, Trump's Labor Department alleges that Trump's immigration enforcement has devastated the Ag workforce and caused a "risk of supply shock-induced food shortages."
Trump Labor Department Says His Immigration Raids Are Causing a Food Crisis
In a filing in the Federal Register, the Labor Department argues there are “immediate dangers to the American food supply” due to a lack of migrant agricultural workers.
