One of the reasons the sort of vulgar poptimism thing of the 00s and 10s always felt off is that the best truest and most interesting work is rarely ever made for a pop audience. Something that appeals to everyone is usually not going to be the hole that was made for you OR the creators.
I think that as an indie game dev without a large publisher, your target audience is not gamers in general, it is sickos.
It's hardcore sickos that will be diving the depths of your genre and finding your game, and it is sickos who will be spreading it.
Please the passionate, not the masses.
