Cerberus, a private equity firm, buys a chain of hospitals, sells the land on which they sit, and charges them rent. The hospitals struggle and start cutting corners. Patients' care worsens, death rates climb. And Cerberus makes $790 million in profit.
Health care accounts for more than 17 per cent of the U.S. economy, or around $4.5 trillion dollars, but the revenues of just two companies—CVS/Aetna and UnitedHealth—account for nearly one in every seven dollars the nation spends on health care.
The Gilded Age of Medicine Is Here

It’s already hit. Our private insurance premium 45% increase hit Oct 1; $2700/ mo premium for one parent one college student. Plus 5k deduct, plus 20% copay… $40k /year off the bat just to have the policy. Self employed. Same high tax rate folks whose income too high for help. Too low for breaks.

Under capitalism, food isn't produced to feed people- food is produced to make a profit. When it's not profitable to feed people, we let them starve.
Even when our labor has conquered scarcity, capitalism must manufacture scarcity in order to justify its existence.
