Their planet was on fire, their future was gone, and their government had finally taken off its mask and gone full totalitarian, and other countries had been following suit. And why? Because the folks at the top thought God spoke to them and gave them permission to set fire to the world so that they, His Chosen People, could build it back up to their liking. That, or they were born with enough money that they, themselves, figured they were God.

An inventor dreamed up the trolley car and the tracks it glides upon, an artist designed the interior with its leather benches and brass hand rails, a woodworker built the seats and an artisan sewed and stuffed their cushions, engineer made sure the electric mechanisms were hooked up properly to the wires above and helped design the strange, hollow wheels that hug the steel inlaid in the pavement, the pavement was mixed and poured by sweating day laborers, the road was plotted and named by city planners. A thousand of our hands have touched the trolley and its tracks. And all of those brilliant, strong, industrious hands had their work stolen from them by the ruling class, the billionaires, the bosses. They took our finished work and then tied us to the tracks and shed a single crocodile tear as they gripped the handle of the switching lever. The needs of the profits outweighs the needs of the few, you understand? Don’t think about how we all had a hand in our own demise! Don’t ask who decided to stick us in this idiotic moral hypothetical in the first place! Think of the money! But the rich, the powerful, the politicians, the global elite, whatever you want to call them—they are down here with us, no matter how much they money they spend. Their high-tech bunkers will not save them. Their private militias will not protect them. Their space shuttles will not make it to Mars. We are shoulder to shoulder, backs against the steel, ropes biting into our bodies, necks craned, staring down the twin lamps of the trolley car careening forward at breakneck speed. Their bodies will get torn apart the same as ours. All blood will pool as one, in the end, and soak into the Earth, back where it began. There is nobody at the lever. We’re all going down together in this ingenious trap we constructed, a trap we built with our brilliant, strong, industrious hands.
