It occurs to me all the yelling at ICE in MPLS isn't merely funny. Getting made fun of like this is awful for morale. ICE is losing field officers faster than it can wave them through training, and a big part of it is how little of this these little weasels can take.

In a lot of ways, I'm really lucky. I work from home. I write and draw books. I still experience a lot of the same normal creative issues. I'm burned out. My current project frustrates me. But a few things in my routine have changed. Me: Hey, mom. Are the cousins okay? How's grandma? And your sisters? Me: Oh, good. Yeah. Okay, that's good. I'll call you later. Watching Bob's Burgers on repeat while I work. My friends check in from time to time. Text: I got rubber-bulleted by ICE just on my way back from work. Ouch. Text: Hey I'm gonna observe tomorrow at the protest. I'll text every hour, and if you don't hear from me, please call [number] and give them my identifying information. I'd probably be at the Whipple. Okay? Text: They knocked on my door, but I'm okay. I demanded a signed judicial warrant, and they couldn’t provide one, so they left. I’m worried all the time. Very little in the news feels encouraging. Headline: Mayor Kaohly Her says she was told to carry a passport amid ICE operations in Minnesota St. Paul Mayor elect Kaobly Her says her office received reports of federal agents going door-to-door asking where the Asian people are. I have always told my white students that they can acknowledge the harm that white supremacy has done, and choose to repair that harm, but I've advised them not to stay there.

You do have some fierce AF ancestors, too. It's just that we don't learn about them or what we learn is lies *on purpose.*

An interlude from DON'T GO GENTLY, a Robin Hood retelling set in Wisconsin in the near-future during societal collapse.

An inventor dreamed up the trolley car and the tracks it glides upon, an artist designed the interior with its leather benches and brass hand rails, a woodworker built the seats and an artisan sewed and stuffed their cushions, engineer made sure the electric mechanisms were hooked up properly to the wires above and helped design the strange, hollow wheels that hug the steel inlaid in the pavement, the pavement was mixed and poured by sweating day laborers, the road was plotted and named by city planners. A thousand of our hands have touched the trolley and its tracks. And all of those brilliant, strong, industrious hands had their work stolen from them by the ruling class, the billionaires, the bosses. They took our finished work and then tied us to the tracks and shed a single crocodile tear as they gripped the handle of the switching lever. The needs of the profits outweighs the needs of the few, you understand? Don’t think about how we all had a hand in our own demise! Don’t ask who decided to stick us in this idiotic moral hypothetical in the first place! Think of the money! But the rich, the powerful, the politicians, the global elite, whatever you want to call them—they are down here with us, no matter how much they money they spend. Their high-tech bunkers will not save them. Their private militias will not protect them. Their space shuttles will not make it to Mars. We are shoulder to shoulder, backs against the steel, ropes biting into our bodies, necks craned, staring down the twin lamps of the trolley car careening forward at breakneck speed. Their bodies will get torn apart the same as ours. All blood will pool as one, in the end, and soak into the Earth, back where it began. There is nobody at the lever. We’re all going down together in this ingenious trap we constructed, a trap we built with our brilliant, strong, industrious hands.
