Research on traditional school vouchers strongly suggests they actually lower academic achievement. In Louisiana, for example, 2 research teams found negative academic impacts as high as -0.4 standard deviations—extremely large by education policy standards—with declines that persisted for years.

Advocating for strong public schools needs to be a central part of any urbanist agenda. It’s one of the few urban civic institutions remaining which regularly brings people together to create community. And you can’t truly advocate for public schools if you don’t send your own kids there.
