I wrote a long article about Rieko Kodama, her career at Sega, the evolution of her company, the games she worked on (including some canceled games and/or games for which she is not credited), the status of women and working conditions in the video game industry, etc.

Illustration: a portrait of Rieko Kodama with some of the games she has worked on. The dominant colors are yellow, purple and red. Counterclockwise from top left: Rieko Kodama, Alis and Lutz from Phantasy Star, Sonic in a maze, Alex Kidd and his motorbike next to Flicky on a waterfront pier, Joe Musashi and his dog near the Statue of Liberty facing a skyline, the three playable characters from Golden Axe seen from behind on the edge of a cliff, and one of the flying ships from Skies of Arcadia.

Strangers of Paradise deserves way more credit than it was given. It has among the best realisations of iconic monsters in any Final Fantasy game.

A collection of inventive and delightful tiny games. Think UFO-50 mixed with Wario Ware. Full of surprises, and actually pretty addictive. #gaming #videogame

Many moons ago I also submitted a question to the IC podcast specifically for you to wax lyrical about Iggy's Reckin Balls whenever you were a guest but this has yet to transpire!

Both are among my favourite N64 games. I vividly remember visiting my semi-local store weekly for months to ask if Jet Force Gemini was available because it was seemingly endlessly delayed without notice.

I also got Iggy instead of Ocarina of Time for that Christmas and I do not regret it at all.

My first experience with the original Prince of Persia was the DOS version at a childhood friend's house. Not sure what terrified us more - the crunchy "falling on spikes" death sound blasting through speakers or the imposing time limit.

Needless to say, as young kids we were rubbish at it.

"Which is your favorite/definitive version of the original Prince of Persia?"

💾As promised-- after 35 years, here's a proper blog post with my thoughts, and the story behind Prince of Persia's multiple 1990s ports.

Many few years back, I re-edited the live-action/cartoon hybrid ATTACK OF THE SUPERMONSTER and showed it once in theatres as part of the Children's Matinee series MEGA FUN MOVIE EXPLOSION we ran. This is the trailer I made for it, which humbly, I think still rules.

The Borderlands 4 inventory UI wouldn't be any more difficult to use if someone put their hands in front of my eyes every time I opened it.

"Man this new game is kicking off with the most devious and mindbending puzzle I've ever seen! You almost have to think in four dimensions just to know where to start! Oh, wait, this is just the inventory UI."

DoDonPachi DaiOuJou DX Reco.ver (大往生DX-レコver.-) was preserved by Yuuku! Only sold on December 30, 2007, this is a score competition variant of DoDonPachi DaiOuJou DX. Given how it was only available for one day, this may be one of the rarest i-mode games preserved so far.

Star Ocean has the best dissonance:

Guy: Captain, the universe will be destroyed if we don't do anything.

Captain: Hold up, just gotta improve my baking and philosophy skills so I can equip this rabbit-shaped ring I won at a carnival.

Kemco's only published the console versions but don't ignore it. This game and its sequel are both hot stuff.

This exact bit attacked me personally at a cellular level. Utterly infuriating.

I suspect that a lot of your art is (probably?) tied up in corporate copyright but a book of your work with some commentary on each piece would be delightful.

I loved this game as a kid and remember spending ages trying to beat one of the stages towards the end of the game.

I also remember an extended family member finding a Mickey game in a skip once in great condition that they gave to me, and there was a neat final stage with an actual boss to beat.

There was a question on the IC podcast that asked how big should a player character be relative to the screen and you said "one pixel". I think of this whenever I think of HK because of the pitch black maze that kills you if you don't have a light source. That sin can fuck right off.

Demonschool all the way for me. Hollow Knight was a good game that I only bought after believing that it was as incredible as the ardent fans had yelled, and it was not. Fool me once, etc etc.

I remember that most of this game involves the husband being relentlessly gaslighted by the therapist. I also remember being personally asked if I had bowel problems as a true or false question. What a weird, entertaining game!
