Hi, Jordan Mechner here. You might know my video games (Prince of Persia, etc)💾🎮 I've recently written and drawn a graphic novel memoir, "Replay"📕It's my story of 4 decades making games, and my family's story of surviving two world wars.

"A música que tocamos no CD player para inspiração é do caralho. A abertura vibrante de Lawrence da Arábia, de Maurice Jarre - incrível"

Uma das partes que tive que marcar dos diários que @jmechner.bsky.social escreveu durante o desenvolvimento de Prince of Persia.

Dito isso, olha só o que chegou

My dad had a friend/colleague named Walter and Walter and my Dad used to play this version (IBM PC) on their lunchbreak 30 years ago. This is the 1st version I ever played although I prefer the SNES version.

DOS version for me. These days, especially with the widescreen mod by FluffyQuack.

I really enjoyed the SNES and Mac versions as well, though.

I easily have 1,000+ hours playing the Macintosh version of Prince of Persia. If you’ve not played the 30fps restoration (seemingly removed at some point to address some latest issue) you’re missing out!

For folks who've asked for details about the story behind Prince of Persia (rotoscoping my brother on VHS, etc), you'll find many answers on my website at jordanmechner.com -- and if you want to go deeper, in my published journals and graphic novel memoir REPLAY.

"Which is your favorite/definitive version of the original Prince of Persia?"

💾As promised-- after 35 years, here's a proper blog post with my thoughts, and the story behind Prince of Persia's multiple 1990s ports.

My first experience with the original Prince of Persia was the DOS version at a childhood friend's house. Not sure what terrified us more - the crunchy "falling on spikes" death sound blasting through speakers or the imposing time limit.

Needless to say, as young kids we were rubbish at it.

DOS for the nostalgia, SNES for the pixel art, and of course your one and only Apple II version, those are my faves 🤓

My first PoP experience was on my Granddad's Amiga 500 when we used to visit him as a kid.

My restoration of #PrinceOfPersia's artwork by Katsuya Terada used on the cover of the #SuperFamicom and #SuperNintendo (PAL) releases. This is a v2 of my previous work adding missing bits at the top/bottom using different sources, applying the usual upscale/clean/retouch combo.
Prince of Persia clean artwork by Katsuya Terada used on the cover of the Super Famicom and Super Nintendo (PAL territories) releases. Image depicts the prince wielding a sword with the princess by his left side along another woman holding a dagger. On his right side one of the bosses can be seen. Jaffar is on the background, left side, with a menacing look, while at the bottom a skeleton can be seen, and our little white mouse friend right in the middle.

A few years ago I used your Apple II source to port PoP to the BBC Micro! bitshifters.github.io/posts/prods/... It took me nearly a year, with graphics and sound updated for the hardware, but it was a ton of fun and I was constantly impressed for how advanced the original game was for its time.

The version I have the most nostalgia for is the Amiga version, which is the one I originally beat. That version captivated even my sisters who generally weren't a fan of games.

But my current favorite might just be the 2011 C64 version, which I found to be a rather impressive feat.

For me it's by far the Mac version in black & white. Running on my father's Mac classic.
Never managed to go beyond level 4 at that time, but it was my first true game and still a beloved one.
I finally managed to finish it years later when it was added as bonus on the 1st PoP on PS2

Yep, POP Classic was produced by Ubisoft as a follow-up to Sands of Time- I guess you could call it a remake of the original 2D POP, 15 years after the original.

hey look at @ramiismail.com and me on a video call from almost exactly 1 year ago, talking games. We look so happy. Despite all the crap going on, the human spirit just wants to make shit. Hi Rami <3

And we announced the game we were talking about, called "Australia Did It" a few weeks ago.
