One of the most important things that Stoppard did was respect the intelligence of his audience. One of the early reviews of Arcadia said it was “too clever by three quarters“ and of course it isn’t, it’s just a play that doesn’t think you’re stupid.

Just had three or four scenes complete with perfect dialogue & decent world building drop into my head.

OK, so if a) people are ‘coming over here’, having loads of kids, not working & getting lots of benefits, and b) your friends (who look just like you) are working 60 hours a week and ‘waiting’ til they can afford kids when they could just have benefits .. IF that were true: your friends are idiots

At one of the games this week, I hosted two best friends - one a estate agent, the other a undertaker, which gave me the opportunity to ‘spontaneously’ come up with a great Nora Ephron line from When Harry Met Sally which doesn’t get quoted as much as the other great Nora Ephron lines (1/2)
