I find "America isn't really set up for it" to be an annoying rebuttal to any sort of proposal to reduce car dependency. Our leaders used policy to create a system of car dependency and we can sure as hell use policy to undo that. There are absolutely barriers, but do nothing is not a solution.

if democratic electeds truly believe trump is an existential threat to democracy, an autocrat, and a pedophile, they should stop voting for his nominees/legislation and should plan to raze every single thing named after him or changed because of him when he leaves office

Trump and Stephen Miller are actually failing in crucial ways. Deportations are lagging behind their goals, courts are mostly functioning, and their fascist, ethnonationalist cruelties have unleashed a countermobilization of unexpected scope and power.

If this year was about getting off US tech, 2026 is the year to reassess the digital revolution — what works, what doesn’t; what to keep, and what to reject.

I’ve only just started to consider what needs to change about how I use digital technology, but I’m excited to learn more next year.
We need to reassess our relationship to digital tech
Getting off US tech led me to a wider questioning of digital convenience

The most telling Bari Weiss incident came when "The Free Press" excused George Floyd's murder, @radleybalko.bsky.social highlighted factual errors, and Weiss's reaction was not to make corrections, but to invite Balko on a podcast.

There is no truth, there are no standards, there is only content.
Every part of this is embarrassingly lame.

Glad the FT is asking the question. Even if I’m not convinced they found a compelling answer.
I get that Starmer & Reeves are unpopular, I really don’t understand the extent of the dislike.

It is astonishing to recall this but yes: professional politics commentators, people who theoretically rely on public trust for their livelihood, were queueing up to praise the excellence of the opposition’s relentless lying. Which perhaps tells us things about how we got here, does it not.
I think part of this is that all the pundits said, in their podcasts, which they put out in public where people could hear them, "these guys are just lying to get elected." But when *they* said it, it was smart and savvy politics by their mates, so they're confused it hasn't worked out well.
Can't do much better than this really. A more interesting question is why people find it surprising.

Call me crazy, but I do think it's important for news orgs to work on business models that don't treat their readers like enemies, just like I thought the same of record labels decades ago. Too many business models are antagonistic. We can fix that.

Heartening to hear the hosts embrace correct cool takes such as campaigns and messaging having increasingly limited impact.

Unless Democrats and aligned orgs address the media ecosystem and democratize the party — both things they explicitly don’t want to do — that will remain the case.
From "Democrats should abandon trans rights" to "I want to have sex with a computer." Wake up, honey, it's the worst takes of the year.
