The TRO in Chicago Headline Club v. Noem:
- (mostly) no targeting of journalists or ordering crowds to disperse
- restrictions on use of less-lethal munitions
- two warnings before use of riot control weapons
- must wear ID and uniform (or similar)

Not all the orgs fit this mold (which makes sense—the admin has no ideologically coherent project aside from domination). But I have lots of conversations where people fear the main focus will be groups w/ radical, anti-carceral politics, or direct action groups, etc. I think that's not quite right.
n-th-n.bsky.social
The groups listed include ActBlue, Indivisible, etc.—

It's important to distinguish what they're actually doing from what they say they're doing.

The focus isn't mainly groups anyone associates with radical politics or direct action. The main focus is destroying any meaningful opposition party.

He cannot capitulate to cops enough and they will hate him anyway. He knows (I believe he knows anyway) the jail-building plan is an absurd deflection from the inherent barbarism of human caging, a massive money pit, and a false “solution.” He needs to take a principled stand on this.
n-th-n.bsky.social
My take is that he made a trade off. He felt he could only take on one immovable object in NYC politics, and he picked real estate instead of cops. But in trying to run away from past comments critical of the carceral state, he’s aiming to casually spend $16b building jails. It’s just atrocious.
n-th-n.bsky.social
People on the left are picking apart his Palestine statements (critiques which are all substantively correct of course) but this is something he actually sets policy around. And yet.
n-th-n.bsky.social
People are like “socialism!!” but municipalities are notoriously hamstrung by lack of fiscal autonomy. And yet. The idea is to make a once-in-a-lifetime infrastructure investment under Mamdani… in building jails. JAAAAAILS. Like, why is this not a salient issue in the campaign?
n-th-n.bsky.social
"But the contracts have been signed, NYC can't back o.."

NO. Cuomo today said clearly he wouldn't continue the project (his plan is an abomination of a different flavor: to invest in and expand Rikers' jail complex but keep it on the island).

The new jails haven't been built. It's not inevitable.
n-th-n.bsky.social
People bristle when I say this, but:

It's horrific that at a time of ascendant fascism (driven largely by criminalization), Zohran Mamdani is committed to following through on NYC's 2019 plan to spend $16 billion (a pre-tariff pricetag that's unrealistically low) on building *JAILS* throughout NYC.

ICE is not only chasing down every random brown person in Chicago, they have a cameraman following them to film this for social media. Cruelty and inhumanity as content.

This very very very bad. I cannot stress this enough. I said that they crossed the Rubicon with arresting Ras Baraka several months ago. This is very bad and portends more bad things for regular people.

I cannot stand to hear/read the “how did we get here” and “this is “un-American” crowds. It actually makes me feel like I’m going fucking crazy.

Sometimes (like tonight) I cannot sleep thinking about all of the immigrants who over the years told me we were headed to the place our country currently finds itself, and how little people seemed to care because it was immigrants saying it.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

State cops literally assisted ICE in assaulting and arresting people who had been actively complying with the demands of state police. Folks were on the sidewalk, and ICE marched up and attacked the crowd for a photo op. IL state cops helped. @govpritzker.illinois.gov must be held accountable.

We are here because policing in the U.S. has been this way for generations. This is why ICE acts with impunity. They know they can act this way.

In the 1990s, under the pretext that Cuba was a terrorist aggressor, the US passed a rightwing corporate reparations law to benefit landowners expropriated by Castro.

Today, the Supreme Court agreed to hear Exxon's plea to help it take all of Cuba's money for nationalizing the oil refineries.

Leqaa Kordia's case has gotten less press than others', but it represents the peak of cruelty & absurdity. The gov't has claimed remittances=funding Hamas, consulting a lawyer=evidence of flight risk, and attending a protest=a danger to US security. Utter Barbarism.
