Hey, it's my print debut for National Geographic! This fall, I got to accompany folks from the Fort Worth Zoo on an incredible adorable mission: releasing tiny Texas horned lizards to new lives in the Hill Country.

(You will want to click on this one, trust me. The photos are adorable.)
Is the grumpy-faced Texas horned lizard adorable enough to survive?
As habitat loss and invasive predators decimate the Texas horned lizard population, researchers are banking on statewide fervor to bring them back.

VatDS Update!

The downside to writing thesis-like text is having to edit it again later and not have your eyes glaze over. It's some real sowing/reaping dynamics.

In general, AI adoption levels are a measurement of to what extent a particular reward system (a corporation, a market, academia as a whole system) has ceased to distinguish between doing a thing and pretending to do a thing
One of many things the pro-AI crowd doesn't seem to understand is the very important distinction between academic scholarship and the production of papers. Of course they can be related but they're not necessarily the same thing

people will see the frustration and the irritability that comes with being close to a creative vision but not quite executing it, and mistake it for a flaw to be completely steamrolled and sanded away instead of recognizing it as the crucial fuel that leads to the ecstasy of eventually surpassing it

i have said this repeatedly but i am tired of the current tech modus operandi being to completely sand down the human experience of all of its edges because of the fear of something being sort of hard to do and resell us this water poisoning polished off turd as Temu Humanity

This reminds me of how, back when I used to do some HCI work and was prototyping designs for testing with users, it became really obvious really quickly that the more ‘high fidelity’ the mockups were, the more people focused on ‘pixel-pushing’ type comments as opposed to large structural changes.
We spoke to a dozen professional concept artists who are currently or have previously worked in game development about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs any easier.

Zero said it did. Most said it made things harder.

Concept Artists Say Generative AI References Only Make Their Jobs Harder
“The ‘early ideation stages’, when worlds are being fleshed out by writers and artists, are literally crucial to the development of a game’s vision,” said one artist.
