My roundup of my published work in 2024 is quite short. I had one new story (novelette-length) published this year: “The Four Sisters Overlooking the Sea,” in Asimov’s Science Fiction, September/October 2024.

People once again need to internalize that "generative AI" is a small subset of machine learning, that machine learning is a critical tool that you cannot run a site without past a certain volume Bluesky has long since exceeded, and that it is FAR more reliable than user reporting.

Dear [Author],

Your book [Title] is wonderful. I had painful urination and blood in my urine for years, until I read [Title] and now there is a clear golden stream.

[Title] deserves a wider readership. My team of 5,000 cyber-turtles can post honest reviews and raise your Zoob ranking, for a modest

I remember awhile back, there was an article where the headline was like, "People on Bluesky can't take a joke", and people were flaming it in the comments assuming it was defending people who were making light of racism/misogyny/etc.

No, it's about this

When I saw that I was torn between "that's bonkers" and "...you know, I bet JRR Tolkien had some real empathy over the 'got conscripted and sent somewhere miserable to fight in an absolutely pointless war' experience."

Donald Trump has heard all his most loyal voters' complaints about how health care sucks in their states, it costs too much and it's a pain in the ass to access, and he has a message for them: fuck you and die bsky.app/profile/murr...

When SF writer (or, at the time, SF fan) Joe Haldeman was drafted and sent to Vietnam, he received letters there from J.R.R. Tolkien.

Getting to show you all this cover and announce that VILLAIN is officially coming out in May of next year is such a joy and a relief i don't even know how to express it.

the cover for a book entitled Villain by Natalie Zina Walschots. the cover is a bright magenta with dark blue and teal lettering for the title, and the author's name is in yellow. there is an image of the silhouette of a woman carrying a cane, surrounded by the silhouettes of five superheroes.

Hey this reminds me, I found out there's an app that will send a check-in message to your phone each day, and notify a person you designate if you don't click the "I'm fine!" button.

In case your thought here is, "yeah, I live alone, I HOPE my pet eats me rather than starving..."

(I think there's actually some upthread discussion of what terrible pets raccoons are. They have the dexterity of monkeys and the morality of feral cats. Not actually something you want to have living in your house! Black bears totally look like giant raccoons, though.)

A true miniature pig would probably be a real hit as a pet. Like a pig that grew to the weight of a good-sized dog would be SO much more manageable than "miniature" pigs that exist now.

This is Chicago but the take-home lesson here is universal. Pay attention to your local elections and vote in them!

Actually, it really matters whether your electeds are progressive. We are often frustrated on the left at what electeds can deliver, but we have to remember moments like this. Paul Vallas would NOT have created ICE free zones.

HAPPENING NOW — This morning, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order establishing “ICE-free zones.”

“That means that city property and unwilling private businesses will no longer serve as grounds for these raids,” Johnson said to applause.

Just as a reminder, Bondi’s origin story in Trump world is that she said she was going to investigate Trump University, Trump sent her a $25K check and the investigation disappeared. She later became Trump’s personal defense lawyer. So yeah, don’t challenge her integrity.

If you’re looking for Covid shots for your kids.

I was ready to lie and say Asthma but they don’t ask what underlying condition. Pharmacist apologized and said “we have to ask.” When my husband went he answered “no” and she said “you need to answer yes.” He got the jab.

We had luck at Walgreens for my teen. Make an appointment online and simply answer “yes” when they ask if they have underlying conditions.

I'd love to hear your thoughts sometime, maybe in person. I don't know if there's a way to do multi seat RCV that's less annoying/confusing but I'm not any kind of RCV expert.
