Entirely on form for Starmer but still absolutely mind boggling

Still absolutely nothing to say about far right thugs rioting and attacking the police while a US tech billionaire calls for a violent insurrection on our streets

My longform investigation on Qatar's global centrality from last month ends on the note of Qatar's unspent power. Doha coming under attack from both Iran and Israel now edging Qatar further in the direction of deploying what it can to protect itself.

This stuff may well be for show, but nonetheless over the past 4 days there has been a remarkable realignment in the Gulf after the Doha strike

The Labour government's response to a summer of open racism, including physical attacks and the demonisation of some of its own Cabinet, has been to hide. 'Anti-racism' is something you actually have to do, not something you are. Seriously, why can't people like this hear themselves?

Ouch. I’m talking about a general approach, not a single instance. And I think you’ll find, as a generalisation admittedly, that Labour supporters are anti-racism.

As an extension of this my theory is that the fracture of the extended family over the last 50 years or so has made what is only manageable as a group care and financial pooling effort become a solo endeavour and so the only component that can be adjusted now is how much you decide to put in.

My theory is that there is *one* way to raise birth rates, and it is to normalise hands off French-style parenting. France is the only country in the world where the amount of time parents spend on care has fallen rather than risen, and has the highest fertility rate in Europe
janecoaston.bsky.social
Finland has this and low birth rates! I’m not kidding, it is literally a global phenomenon.

This week's column is on how nothing will ever be enough to take the sting out of immigration, and that's because political and media elites have an interest in radicalising the issue, constantly moving it along to the next stage of crackdown.

Fascinating read about a country I know little about. Enjoy reading @nesrinemalik.bsky.social opinion pieces in The Guardian, but often feel they are too short. This long read is really well written, great work.

Thank you, and glad you enjoyed!

I think in the short term it's hard to tell, but I think if it's a long term one then interesting things might happen
