Who ❤️ data? Our 36 specimens (31 animal, 5 plant) so far represent 8/31 (25%) animal and 2/14 (14%) plant phyla/divisions. Chordata/mammals are winning (but many of these appeared in OVERRATED). @joshlukedavis.com and @nhcooper123.bsky.social have done OK so far but there's more diversity to cover!
Barchart showing distribution of specimens across animal phyla. Chordata = 15, Arthropoda = 8, Mollusca = 3, Annelida, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Nemertea and Onychophora = 1. Chordata is coloured to show that we have most mammals (7) then fishes/reptiles (3), then birds/tunicates (1). Bar chart showing that 4 plant specimens were angiosperms and 1 was a bryophyte

I do love a graph…I’m mostly proud that I stopped myself at two very basic graphs. 📊

Introducing BIRDBASE, which aims to be the world's most comprehensive avian trait ecology database. Article links to open access paper, & data in Excel spreadsheet. phys.org/news/2025-09... #science #environment #ecology #eco #biology #bird #birds #birding #birdwatching #openaccess #datascience
BIRDBASE dataset tracks ecological traits for 11,589 species of birds

Today featured two things with the word “Apophenia” i.e. the tendency to perceive meaningful connections between unrelated things. Pretty sure the world is trolling me at this point.

Haha this was clearly a panicked teenager telling a parent “err yeah it means meeting someone I met online…”

New! Cassetteboy vs Keir Starmer.

This took absolutely ages, so if you'd like to buy us a coffee at ko-fi.com/cassetteboy we'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Delightful 1940s book that shows that people have always understood Weird Duck Time
Cover of a book called Ducks are different with illustrations by Angus H. Shortt showing a cartoonish but accurate drawing of a bufflehead duck facing the viewer Cartoon of a hooded meganser showing accurate colouration but exaggerating the size of the feet and showing it with a deranged expression and the wierd "teeth" that they have

As a frequent user of the ponds, it disgusts me that terfs are taking a beautiful place and pouring their hate into it. Please fill in this survey if you want to protect this space for all women and make trans women feel. PS the ducks think terfs suck. And the friendly fox. And the crows.

The Gender Critical have already inundated this survey with their disgusting views on banning trans people from using the ponds.

Would be a shame if we inundated with trans positive views on not banning trans people.

Thanks everyone for attending the hack-a-thon!

Great two days of BES data/code hack-a-thon. 111 people (in person + online) collating data and chatting about open science. Big take homes so far: people ❤️ open science; data/code archiving means different things to different people; we can make some simple improvements with big impacts!
A room full of people working on laptops

Also massive thanks to you and Graziella for taking charge of the online team :). I also learned loads and I’m excited to apply it to future work.

When images of glacial retreat are posted online it's amazing how many people's gut reaction is "summer vs winter!" without any consideration for latitude + light levels or knowledge of actual glaciers.
#ChristianAslund
#Blomstrandbreen
#Svalbard
The image shows six panes. The top left pane shows the Blomstrandbreen glacier (Svalbard) as photographed in 1928 by the Norwegian Polar Institute labelled "The Arctic, Summer 1928". The middle left pane shows the same glacier as photographed in 2002 by Christian Aslund labelled "The Arctic, Summer 2002". The bottom left pane shows the same glacier as photographed in 2022 by Christian Aslund labelled "The Arctic, Summer 2022". The top right pane is black and labelled "The Arctic, Winter 1928". The bottom right pane is all black and labelled "The Arctic, Winter 2002". The bottom right pane is all black and labelled "The Arctic, Winter 2022". Yes, the labels and panes on the right are added in jest but the topic is serious: overall this glacier has retreated over 2 km since 1928 and over 3 km since 1861.

A very lovely evening with Eric Idle at the Albert Hall surrounded by emotional men in their 70s! Now I really need a rewatch of “the life of Brian”…

Do you know where baby snakes come from? 🤔

Contrary to popular belief, only about 70% of snakes lay eggs - many species, like the anaconda, give birth to live young! 🐍

Discover why they do this and how it works in this week’s #SurprisingScience 🥚
