Finished today. This is essential reading. Orwell’s depiction of working class struggle in England—and his prognosis of the socialist project—is almost prescient when read in modern times.

Orwell’s description of the housing problem at the time seems almost prescient as someone reading this in 2025.

It’s cold in Westchester, and we got our first proper snow since moving in. Rosie wanted to play all the same.

So how long before the IMF and World Bank start pumping loans and aid into Syria on the condition that they privatize large sectors of their economy, which then either get bought up by US financial titans or local oligarchs?

Reading this book while hearing the news of regime change in Syria certainly makes one wonder what economic opportunities different actors see in the region. Spoiler, doesn’t really bode well for its populous and democratic rule more generally.

Take a minute to consider what's happening and whether or not Biden should pardon his son.

This is fine. Trump isn’t just pardoning convicted felons, he’s appointing them to his cabinet. Hunter’s case was always the true political persecution.

Just started listening to this fairly new podcast about covert operations. It’s hard to listen to this episode and not believe that America is—and has been—the target of a foreign operation: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/r...

Since we’re talking about not obeying in advance, here are some other worthy lessons in Snyder’s book:

Corporations buying up single family homes—only to turn around and rent them or keep them off the market—are some of the most culpable parties here. Folks in office should be shouting from the mountaintops to ban such practices, impose vacancy taxes, and ease zoning laws.
Building many more homes is critical to reduce the cost of living in CA & other blue states.

Our failure to build homes is also the key driver of the demographic shift that’ll cost us dearly in the next census: Loss of House seats & electoral college votes.

We must end the housing obstructionism.

Any sports fans remember when Marshawn Lynch laughed in Pete Carroll’s face after he called a pass play in the Super Bowl on the 1 yard line? That’s the kind on energy I’m bringing to folks that voted for Trump.
