OK, that's a fun wee gedankenexperiment and all, but it implies

"We can't know if this LLM is conscious."

only in the *exact* same sense as

"We can't know if this pebble is conscious."

...and before you know it, you're a universal animist arguing that building a wall could be cruel to rocks.

Tbf, I think that a lot of folks in a CS context understand "we don't know how it works" as "it's a black box; studying its processes is not trivial." Which is right!

But outside of that context, most folks understand it as "it's a mysterious emergent phenomena beyond our ken!" Which is a lie.

as a girl with a PhD in natural language processing and machine learning it's actually offensive to me when you say "we don't know how LLMs work so they might be conscious"

I didn't spend 10 years in mines of academia to be told ignorance is morally equal knowledge.

We know exactly how LLMs work.
