Something I’m really appreciating about Yom Kippur this year is how the liturgy encourages us to meditate on our individual sins while confession is always collective. It provokes feeling a share of responsibility for some sins I’d normally simply lay at the feet of others. So much to atone for.

Bari Weiss is set to be named the editor in chief of CBS News, the New York Post reports
Paramount Skydance is poised to name Bari Weiss as editor in chief of CBS News in the coming days — giving the hard-charging journalist unusual clout to revamp the struggling network as it also acquires her scrappy news site the Free Press, The Post has learned.

Weiss — a 41-year-old former New York Times opinion writer who has built the Free Press into a buzzworthy site with a contrarian bent — is expected to be named to the top post in a Monday announcement, although the talks are in flux and the timing could change, a source close to the situation said.

"There are so many profound issues being fought over in American politics right now, but the proximate cause of the shutdown is a dumb and illogical aspect of congressional procedure," argues @mattyglesias.bsky.social: www.slowboring.com/p/seventeen-...

Look I like this place, the convos i have are mostly productive, there’s a lot of thoughtful posters, but like everyone once in a while someone will say something like accusing me of being racist against my darker furred cat

"By lunchtime, hours after President Donald Trump said he would send troops to the city, it seemed everyone had a picture to post on social media — a long line at the homemade bread stand, cherry trees still blooming, a cat on a leash." www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/...
Is Portland ‘War ravaged’ as Trump claims? Here’s what residents say.
President Donald Trump had said living in Portland, Oregon, was like “living in hell.” Portlanders mostly met the news with confusion.

Now a new five-year, $37 million NIH consortium will prioritize this public health issue. “There’s no question that the ProPublica reporting was intimately tied to this,” one expert said.

If they had a right-wing, “tough-on-crime” coded mayor there would be endless national profiles about him and how he finally brought sanity back to Chicago.

Now that summer is over, Chicago is still on track to have fewer homicides in 2025 than almost any other year since 2001. This is especially impressive considering that the five most violent years of the 21st century have all been in the past decade.

I’m not sure when it became socially acceptable (in real life OR online) for people to tell you that they don’t like the thing you happily do for work.

Maybe if it’s something that actively harms people? But otherwise, you really don’t have to respond saying “You do [x]? I can’t stand [x]!”
