Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.

(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

I like to let my cereal get a little soggy, and I prefer macaroni and cheese reheated the next day.

But by far the grossest thing I ever ate as a kid was ranch dressing on white rice.

I know this is said a lot but if you hate immigration, you can only eat the foods of your people prior to 1492. So for people of European descent that means not just no indigenous foods (no potatoes, no tomatoes, no corn), no Mexican food and no soul food either - there's no slavery exception clause

I like my voice and don’t mind hearing it recordings. But someone asked me the other day if I’d ever listened to one of my own audiobooks, and I was like, “The whole THING? God no!”

That’s also why a lot of people can’t stand listening to recordings of their own voices.

Even worse, if you record your voice and listen back to it, it may not actually sound correct because the recorder often captures narrow frequency range.

I had some Australians tell me that my Australian dialect was not so bad when I was there, but they had all been drinking at the time, so probably were a lot more receptive.

I tried to call them, but when I gave them my tracking number, they said that it had been rendered to another agent and they could no longer track it. They would not put me on hold with a representative at all!

You will also learn that anybody who says that Australian accents and New Zealand/Aotearoa accents are very similar and that if you’re good at one, you’ll be good at the other, is a damn liar

Try to teach yourself to do a different accent or dialect and you’ll soon realize that you have no idea what you sound like, and maybe it’s completely different than you thought

This is why I found myself on the Cambridge Dictionary site frantically trying to figure out how we in the US say “what”
