I am looking for a Postdoc (3 years, start Mid-2025) to work on conservation genomics of ringed seal in the Baltic.
The project will use genomic data for 100s of individuals, SDM and genomic simulations.

@nicolasdussex.bsky.social et al. investigate the genomic basis of adaptation in the Svalbard reindeer, an endemic subspecies that colonized the High Arctic ~7,000 years ago, adapting to extreme cold, day length changes, and resource scarcity.

This de-extinction absurdity is clearly all about $$$$$$.

Worse, it is being exploited by the right wing as a cover to justify environmental destruction. Every good biologist at Colossal should resign.

We also used simulations to predict the number of mating males required to mitigate the negative effects of genome erosion. One to five males per decade would be needed to remain within a 5% window of genetic change.
Slim predictions
nicolasdussex.bsky.social
However, our results and field data suggest that high male territoriality in the Crater and few mating opportunities for immigrant males could have exacerbated the effects genome erosion.

Great to see our latest paper on Ngorongoro Crater lion genomics out @commsbio.bsky.social

Even after a rapid post-epizootic recovery in the 1970s, habitat fragmentation and continued isolation led to an increase in genetic load and to a reduction in overall genetic variation.

#consgen authority Fred Allendorf cries out in despair for American science in the Missoulian newspaper. It’s terrifying to watch this destruction unfold day by day. My heart goes out to my American colleagues and friends. Stay strong and fight.

Wide range of Earth’s species are showing a decline in diversity
The loss of genetic variation means species may be less resilient to climate change and other stressors

🚨Puffins are starving!
We urged Commissioner Costas Kadis to back the sandeel fishing ban in UK & Scottish waters. Sandeels are vanishing, leaving seabirds like Atlantic Puffins without food

The EU is challenging the ban, risking declines & fragile ecosystems

I would also add kakī (black stilts), but most likely there are other examples of NZ birds with different types of genomic data...
