Mass homelessness did not exist in Canada when I was growing up. Someone tell the kids it ain't normal.

It was created by successive austerity governments. We can reverse those policy directions and end mass homelessness.

1984

According to the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, mass homelessness in Canada emerged around this time as a result of government cutbacks to social housing and related programs starting in 1984. In 1993, federal spending on the construction of new social housing came to an end.

This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

UBCM delegates endorsed a resolution to ask the province to declare housing a human right

Resolution was brought forward by a consortium of 9 local governments with Langford as listed sponsor

No Con speakers, it passed with little opposition but fairly sparse support #bcpoli
Housing
NR17 Declaring Housing as a Human Right Langford
Whereas recognizing housing as a human right fundamentally shifts government motivations by adding critical
urgency and responsibility to ensure access to affordable housing (meaning housing costs are aligned with
income) through policies that prevent homelessness, address the escalating housing and homelessness crisis,
eliminate discrimination, and prioritize the needs of vulnerable and marginalized populations;
And whereas the Government of Canada affirmed the right to housing as a matter of international law and
enshrined it domestically through the National Housing Strategy Act (2019), recognizing housing as a human
right and establishing mechanisms for accountability and inclusion:
Therefore be it resolved that the UBCM call for the BC Government to enshrine housing as a human right in
legislation and forthcoming housing and homelessness strategies, ensuring that housing policy in British
Columbia is grounded in principles of equity, accessibility, accountability, and the inherent dignity of all people.

“Too often, shelters and transitional programs lack privacy, support, doors that lock, adequate hygiene facilities, and basic requirements that most people associate with the concept of housing. These inadequacies prevent healing, family reunification, wellbeing and community connections.”

Canada has announced major housing initiatives, but not targeted the “deeply affordable housing” required to end & prevent homelessness.

"Governments should adopt clear, consistent income-based definitions of “affordable” and “deeply affordable” housing across programs."

IN THE USA…

Anderson Cooper: So it's more expensive to have a chronically homeless person living on the streets than it is to actually subsidize an apartment for them?

Answer: Yes, we’re paying more as taxpayers to walk past that person on the street and do nothing…

Raising the shelter rate to 2025 Market Rental Rates would eliminate 95% of homeless experiences in BC.

I mean, why have income assistance if it doesn't prevent homelessness?
