Universities rely enough on grants that they might eliminate positions — perhaps tenured faculty — if the financial situation becomes dire enough. But in the meantime, grad students, postdocs, and “soft money” researchers typically are paid ENTIRELY on federal grant funding. No grant = no salary.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

I think one of the reasons I love @warren.senate.gov so much is because she’s the kind of Senator I would want to be — a vocal advocate for social justice w/every question & every plan backed up by evidence-based citations for days!!! 💪🏻 It speaks to my nerdy, social justice loving, librarian heart!

One thing that was difficult for me to acknowledge for a long time was that my experience of people in my field WAS different, because I am who I am in it. That meant for too long I was on the "but they were nice to ME" train, which is absolutely not to my credit in any way whatsoever.
People asked Meryl Streep how she could REALLY not have known about Weinstein, and she was basically like “because I’m fucking Meryl Streep, and I didn’t know because he NEEDED me not to know.” she was vital as part of the cover story
