Our article on perinatal self-injurious thoughts & behaviors is out today! We found that the odds of engaging in self-injurious behavior were 256% higher at 7 months postpartum relative to 3rd trimester of pregnancy, even after accounting for three risk factors. doi.org/10.1111/sltb...

📣 New Pub 📣

We captured 30-day emotion intensity & dysregulation data from EMA & examined in relation to cortisol (from hair) during the same period. Emotion intensity & hair cortisol levels were significantly associated among women with high (but not low) emotion dysregulation.

Breaking News: Jane Goodall, one of the world’s most revered conservationists, died at 91. Her discoveries in the 1960s about how chimpanzees behaved in the wild broke new ground and represented what was called “one of the Western world’s great scientific achievements.” nyti.ms/42kpGxt

Great pointer from @nrennie.bsky.social on making data visualisations

We as makers spend hours with the data and creating the visualisation, but we need to consider those who are looking for 5 seconds

#WOMBAT2025 #dataviz
A slide about accurate visualisations asking

Is the chart appropriate
Are the axis ranges reasonable
Is it intuitive
Is the 5 second conclusion the same as the 5 minute conclusion

A really old tree is as therapeutic as hell. This olive tree has been alive since 300 BC. You can tell just looking at it that it’s not been easy. But it’s still here, and as beautiful as anything on Earth

New preprint alert! 🧵

In this commentary, we discuss why and how the study of affective experience and affect regulation would benefit from greater integration of diversity science--or, "the study of the interpretation and construction of human differences."

Our results were staggering: about 67% of youth who reported lifetime SITBs at a baseline assessment failed to report such history one year later. Such inconsistency is concerning, as it hampers accurate risk assessment in a clinical contexts and may add extra noise to our data in research contexts.

As one can imagine, I have some thoughts. Here’s a thread no one asked for:

1. SCIENCE IN THE US IS POLITICAL. No matter how much you want to ignore that fact, it is supported by taxpayer dollars and is therefore, political by nature.

2. BUT it has had bipartisan support for decades, which…

For some scientists fighting partisan attacks, the goal is to defend their work from political interference. But in retaliating, @katherinejwu.com reports, they also run the risk of advancing the narrative that they want to fight.
Scientists Are Caught in a Political Trap
Fighting back against the Trump administration means they start to look more like activists.

🚨 New research alert

We applied machine learning to the large MYRIAD trial (84 schools and 8,376 UK teens) to ask:

👉 Which adolescents benefit most from mindfulness delivered in schools?

Bottom line: One-size-fits-all doesn’t work.

Youth mental health ≠ just individual factors.
School climate, poverty & inequities matter too.
Prevention must move beyond one-size-fits-all to integrate both personal + systemic influences.
