Frederick Wiseman has said this about the people in his films. They watch the cut within their institutions and think it’s fine bcs the behaviour is sanctioned in their in-group. As soon as the film is released and they see how they are viewed outside their circle, then they don’t like it.

I have a former colleague from PRC who was a boy and teen during the Cultural Revolution. He’s talked a little bit about the denunciations in classrooms at the time.
