what bill hwang did was definitely market manipulation. there was just no exit strategy - which makes it dumb market manipulation but market manipulation nonetheless.

i agree with @michaelpettis.bsky.social analysis of the causes of the trade imbalance here but i don't think tariffs are an effective solution (tbf, i'm not getting the sense from the reading that he does, either). they didn't work last time.

as a south african, the most interesting information here is that nebraska was the first state to divest from apartheid south africa.
I hadn't realized quite the zeal with which the HP fortune-- recently a key architect of the "beyond neoliberalism" economic policy paradigm that seems to amount to aggressive trade protectionism + military Keynesianism--was built on apartheid. I also didn't remember this fact about Nebraska!!

i think it's more accurate to say, "austerity leads to less support for mainstream political parties." this does not necessarily need to be the far-right - but it usually is.
I’m not entirely convinced by the austerity -> far right story, but even if (partly) true, it doesn’t imply that German fiscal transfers should prevent far right. In UK, pain of austerity was concentrated (at least initially) on relatively small numbers of people.
